I was sent a 34 tooth sproket instead of a 36 for my xplorer.Just wondering if anyone has every tried one.Does it screw up the 4 wheel drive? Thanks

Most likely, yes. that will make the rear go faster than the front and that is what engages the front hubs.

Actually Rammer, I think it is the other way around. With a smaller rear sprocket, for any given vehicle speed the engine and transmission, and thus the front driveshaft, will be turning over slower than it was with the larger sprocket. That would make the front hubs less likely to engage, or more specifically the rears would have to travel further to engage them. I might be wrong, it gets confusing.

anything under 3 teeth should be fine..

yes i've done it, and it makes alot of differnce in acceleration, and the 4x4 was not messed up.

and the 4x4 works when the drivetrain spins 17 percent faster in EITHER direction.

soo you MAY now find that it takes a millisecond longer before 4 wheel drive engages in forward, and it may be a tad easier to get the front wheels to lock in when going down a hill or decelerating.

altough this really isn't a concern since you don't have ebs on your quad and won't get much in the way of engine braking.

I guess that with a 34 tooth sprocket my xplorer will be faster but loose acceleration?

Stevexplor,
Right now i only have the rear chain on ( havn't figured out sprocket configuration out yet) with a 30 tooth rear sprocket. My bike is modified but i am not loosing acceleration and the bike's power is alot easier to manage when racing and trail riding. Off the line on small flat tracks i can hang w/ the 440ex's and by the end of the race be less than a 1/4 lap ( 4 to 5 bike lengths)behind the leader. I should do better once i modify my seat - i'm 5'8"- and get my butt lower to the floorboards. On the TT's i notice alot more speed in the low to mid range areas - but the engine does not bog down any - surprised me that it didn't lose some low end power. If anyone knows the sprocket configuration ( all 6) to run a 30 tooth rear sprocket, please email at michealandpam@yahoo.com.
