I must have a black cloud over my head! Broke the rear drive chain on Saturday and punched a big hole in the tranny. Does anyone know of a better guard besides the stock plastic one? Chain tension was checked before riding and it was fine.

This is the second tranny in one year. I broke one earlier this year after internal chain broke and gernaded inside. $1200 worth of damage, bought new, complete tranny for $999. Now I am looking at a minimum of $285 for the case half + other broken parts.

Has anyone else heard of problems with the trannys on the scramblers.

Sorry to hear your probs Macho. I'm not sure if you're talking about the lower chain guide, or not, but the newer cases have provisions(drilled and tapped holes) on the trans for a case saver. The case saver is available from your dealer. Installing a chain tensioner from Hot Seat or HPD can help also. Since you're in Elk River, just up 169 (just sounth of Princeton) is the elfen magic work-shop of HPD. Give 'em a call, they'll help you out.

Thanks Modquad.
I will look into it. What are the advantages of the chain tensioner? I thought that Polaris took care of the problems with chain tension with their Concentric Drive System.

For the most part, yes, they did, but there still is room for improvement. Once the Predator gets here, my engine and trans are coming out for a full re-do.

The concentric drive is better, but not perfect. A chain tensioner isn't expensive or difficult to install, and its cheap insurance.

The chain tensioner will give you an extra inch to inch and a half extra chain slack giving you a little extra travel without having to run your chain extra loose. A suggestion-change out the cheap chinese bearings in it with some good sealed ones. Timken should have something that will work for you.
