Default sp 700 gas mileage

Went for a long run last week and got almost 20 miles to the gallon with my 02 sp700. I was amazed after all the talk about gas milege performance. This was hard riding also. Not a ton of mud, but a lot of on the throttle on the brake riding.

Anyway, I am very happy with the mileage.

That's great if it is true. Mine only gets about half of that. Are you sure your speedometer is accurate? When mine was new it read only about half of the actual speed and mileage and had to be replaced. Check your speed and mileage with one of your riding buddies machines and let us know. If it is correct I can only wish mine would get that kind of mileage.

I agree with 700 guy. If you calculate 20 mpg based on 4.75 gallons, your range would be around 95 miles. My 700 will only take me about 60-70 miles / tank (without reserve)(not in mud).

I have looked at my speedo and it is correct. Actually, we had 2 700's on the ride and we both got about the same mileage. I got 82 miles on 4.1 gallons. I couldn't believe it either, but that is how much gas we put in. Actually, there were 6 atvs along and we all had between 80 and 84 miles on our speedo. I don't know if setup has anything to do with it, but we both got our machines at the same place.

You are lucky. A friend of mine just sold his grey Sportsman 700 because of bad gas millage. He only did 7 miles per gallon. With a full thank, he was sucking air after 35 miles.

I have been getting 15-18 depending on how fast you ride slow being 15-20 MPH tops is 15 and faster is 18 but haven't gone for a long ride sense I put heelclicker kit in hope it will be better at slow speeds it shifts up better

My 02 700 runs out at 65 miles without reserve and 71 with (normal trail riding no mud). At the same time my freinds 03 700 gets much better fuel mileage than mine and it's faster to. Not sure why this is? We suspect his 03 may have different carb jetting? He's not willing to let me take his carb apart, so I guess we'll never know. hmm...

Did your dealer rejet your atv when you purchased it. My dealer does!!!! He has done all three of them that I purchased from him. I think you guys need to loojk at jetting!!!! The dealer should make sure you have the correct one's for the area that you ride. I ride mine for a few miles, go back to the dealer, pull the plugs and check them, if they are burning correct that's where we leave it. 2003 SP 700 Mossy Oak 81.1 miles used 3.6 gallons = 22.53 mpg. I also got great mileage with my SP 500

kirby, your last response makes good sense! I will pull the plugs tomorrow and see what’s what. And now that I think of it, I will have my friend “a mechanic” check out the plugs as well. (Two opinions are better than one). Will let you know what we find out.
Thanks….
