Are you happy with the 2003 model? One reply was that it was a little underpowered for the weight, what's your opinion on that? What was your total drive out? and what's your opinion on extended warranties, are they necessary? I've received some great replies, but am still undecided about the Kodiak 400 and the Polaris 400......

We are very happy with the 2003 sportsman 400's.They are not as fast as our 500 ho's but have plenty of power and the guys really like the 400's(actually a 425 motor)they are very trouble free machines.Have yet to take one back to dealer for repair. The 2003 have all the updates of the other sportsman.WE HAVE A 70 YEAR OLD GENTLMAN WHO RIDES ALL DAY WITH US ON HIS SPORTSMAN 400.(APPROX.65-70 MILES OF HARD TRAIL RIDING)

The 400 Sportsman is a lot like the Magnum 330 4x4. They are great machines, great big machines, value priced. They ride like the real deal, but they don't have the power to run with the "Big Dogs". The 500 H.O. by contrast, does.
.... By the way, the 425 responds well to the H.O. carb, manifold and cam, we did it to our old 425EXP with good results. It is the exact same motor as the 500 H.O., but with a shorter stroke and smaller bore, as well as no EBS in the clutch. The discontinued EXP had different cases with a 5-speed manual and auto clutch, we liked it a lot, especially with the H. O. treatment. But for that money you could just buy the 500 H.O. in the first place.

A couple of freinds and I just bought three - two '03 400's and a HO 500. Yes, the 500 is faster but to top speed, maybe three or four lengths. The deal we cut would have cost another $600 for the 500. Eventually, I would like to get the 600 and give my wife the 400 but for now, sweet ride!

Rincon, is it worth paying 600.00 more to get the Kodiac 450 4x4 vs the Polaris sp 450 4x4 at 1200.00. One more thing. I feel if I buy the Kodiac I will not need the extened warranty, however if I buy the Polaris I better get it. Again more money ! What do you have ? And what will be your next atv in the utility class ?

sp 450 4x4 , its a sp400 (425cc's) I have a '00 kodiak and my next quad is gonna be a sp600, power,ride..................
The 450 has a locker, highlow, disc brakes.... the '03 400 isn't as good as the older ones.
