I think im gonna throw some studs on my stock rear Pred tires..is there any specail way of doing this or just pop em in? A guy i talked to said you have to put them in a certain way and on EVERY tread..i was only gonna go ever other one or on 1 row, skip a row, then another row, etc...would this work??

 

this it the way that I'm studding my tires. I'm putting 2 studs in each **** going from out to in. So where the rows are 4 full *****, I will have 8 studs, then the next row, there are 3 full ***** and half ***** on the out side. These I will have 6 studs and not put any on the 1/2 *****. There are 14 rows of 4 and 14 rows of 3, so for each rear tire, there will be 196 studs. The front I'm going to put 2 in each **** on opposit corners. so about a 100 per tire in the front. So in total, i need 592 studs. I went to Home Depot and bought 2 boxes of #8x1/2 sheet metal screws with no slot for a screw driver for less then $9. There were 325 screws per box.

If you don't put enough screws and try to do every other ****, the screws will get riped out very easy. If your going to stud it, do it right the first time. I'm planning on getting 22" tires in the spring, so I'm going to use these tires for winter. However, the studs won't hurt your tires.

 

I get ya...but i dont quite understand the placement on the H part of the tread..maybe you could explain more??

 

I'm putting the studs on each side of the line in the middle of the H.

I don't know if you got it right or not, because I don't know which way youlooking at the tire. So I will put it this way. When looking at your rear tire from the side, the studs will be running from rim to rim, not front to back.

LOL...so the studs in each H are going from front to back...not side to side..i get ya!

 

As far as studs go you should stick with "ice screws". They have a deeper head and are able to be sharpened. You can get them at any dealer out of their Parts Unlimited catalog. Buy the bag of 1000, trust me you'll be glad you did. A bag sells for about $40-45. I tried studding my stock tires. The fronts you have to stud on the RIDGE of the lug, not inside it. The screw will not stick out enough to make a difference if you don't. On the rear use AT LEAST 3-4 screws per lug if you want it to hook up. If you want ultimate traction buy the Chen-Shin tire with plain square ***** on it. It will accept 440 screws per tire (rear). I also used Dunlop tires in the front that had more lugs that were smaller and could get more bite. These are what I found to work on the ice. For the dirt i would probably use the same due to less screws may rip out and wreck the tire. I'll try to take picturtes of this setup if you want to see what I did. It works very well.
