Default Big Winch or Not so Big Winch- That is the question

Has anyone put a big Winch on their ATV? Big like a Warn 6000? Did it work with the existing battery or did you modify to fit a larger battery?

I don't have a big winch on my quad. Its just a 2500 lb warn. But there have been several occasions when that wasn't enough! I haven't had any problems pulling myself out of various "tricky" situations. However there have been times when I have needed to use my winch along with a ****** block to move logs and trees off the trail I was riding on, or to make a new trail. It was then that the 2500lb winch wasn't enough. If I were you I would get the "big" winch. You can always use something that is too strong to a lesser degree. But when you have something that is too weak, you can't use it to a stronger degree.

I just installed a Warn 3.0 ci on my 03 700, I wouldn't try anything bigger. The 3.0 and 2.5 both have .9hp motors and pull about 100amps under full load. A big winch will probably fry that little ATV battery in a hurry, I have fried big batteries with my Warn 8000 on my truck a couple of times.

Also keep in mind that if you are trying to move stuff like GrizRick mentioned, unless you anchor your ATV securely, any extra pulling power isn't going to help. Your ATV probably weighs less than 1000 lbs with you on it, so if you try to pull something that weighs more than 2500 lbs, you're probably going to pull your ATV to it instead of pulling it to your ATV.

I understand these winches are not rated as a true 2000,3000,6000 pound pull but some industry standard of pulling a wheeled weight up a 45 degree ramp. Is that true?

I've broken the cables using ****** blocks and I've been where I needed A LOT more cable then what I get off the standard ATV winch. Thats why I'm looking at a bigger winch. Between deep handle bar mud, going through the ice (see pictures) and way to steep of hills - I think I need something that would lift the 1000 lb (without me) ATV right up off the ground and keep going with me on it.
