Question about CV boots

While riding in the snow last weekend, I noticed that I had a small tear in my right front CV boot, not sure how long it has been that way.
I could see grease on the outside of the boot and a very small tear, about 1/2 cm long. My question is how hard are they to replace and how long before it will do any damage if I was to just pump some grease in there. I want to ride this weekend, we are supposed to get 6-10 inches of snow. Can I just pump some grease in there, is there a repair kit or has anyone ever tried melting a tear back together, or maybe a tire plug?
When I grease the A arms does grease go into the CV boot?
What do you recomend?

My buddy at work just fixed a very small tear in his cv boot with a small bicycle patch and some glue,just clean the area very good scuff it up apply a little glue put the patch and let it dry.If too much grease came out you could put some back in with a syringe.The boot is completely sealed,when you grease the a- arms the grease does not go into the cv boot.Hope this helps.Later.

Go to your dealer and they will have a boot kit (which is a new boot) I think they are around $30. They are very simple to change and don't take very long. Depending on the riding conditions the CV won't last without grease, and to replace it you have to buy a whole new shaft assembly that runs around $250. No, this is a sealed area so when you grease the a-arm grease doesn't go to the boot. If they don't have one in stock fill it full of grease if you must go riding.

hey, ive also had many cv boot problems on my xplorer 400, and ive had lvery large tears in them and ran it for a while but kept a close eye on it, but u should get new ones, if boughten from a dealer they will come with puches of very very thick grease to put in them.(make sure you get it all over all of the bearings and stuff inside. The hardest part of the job will be getting the boot clamps on when you are about finished they crimp very hard. this is definetly something to get done becouse on my old sportsman 400 i ran them torn without crease and it was cute, the whole right side of the front end came off of the awd shaft and the a-arm bolt fell out of the inside and yea things got messy so get it done.
