I'm considering buying a 1996 X-plorer 300 4wd for my wife. She will be doing light trail riding and only occasionally get in mud/water when necessary to follow my riding buddy and me. The machine is in excellent condition and the dealer will warranty it for 30 days. Total price of $3200. Is this a good price? Are there any known
issues with this model? Thanks in advance for any advice!

You would be better off buying a new Xplorer 250. Dealer here sells them for 3995. Those 300's have a chain drive to the front, while the 250's are shaft drive to the front. The rear also is the concentric drive. Plus you'll have a 6 month warranty.

I would agree... I used to own a 94 Xplorer300. Traded it in this month. I do not know the new 250 motor but the 300 was pretty snappy. Nothing compared to the 400 though. If price isn't a factor go bigger...if it is then I would go for the new 250 also. Price seems rather high too on that 96 Xplorer300. I got 3200$ Canadian funds for mine...

Joe- my brother inlaw and I bought 2 new 300 Explorers last year and love them. They ride like the big ones do, top speed is 48 mph, good on gas and they to are chain drives front and rear. The chains worried me somewhat until I met a fella who has a 94 300 Explorer thhat his kids used and abused until this spring. The machine was totaled after hitting a tree. His machine had over 3100 miles on it and the only thing he did to it was a few brake jobs and routine maintenance. Never in the shop once!!They are a very peppy machine and the price on the used one is alittle high, go with Rammers suggestion on the 2000 250 Explorer, for the little extra $ you are getting new+ the warranty. You will be happy with it, my local dealer has sold quite a few of them and has not seen any come back yet he said, wish he could say the same on some of the other models though! Good luck in your purchase.

I would also go with the Xplorer 250 I have it and for the price it can't be beat. 3995 that is a good deal, up here they are 4299.

if 4x4 isn't going to be needed then the Trail boss is even less than the Xplorer 250, it is 2 wheel drive but it is really decent machine it think it goes for 3300? right around there.

I have a 99 300xplr. I would agree that if you do not need 4x4 go with the trail boss or trail blazer. I just bought my wife a 00 trail blazer and rode a 00 trail boss recently as well. I liked both. And the lighter weight and lower price are a plus.

I agree with xplr. For the price they are asking, you get a new one for near that. I just bought a 2000 trail boss for my wife for $3,300. It is perfect for her. I like how it rides, but I like the power in my 425 magnum 4x4 (98).

98 Magnum and 00 Trail Boss
