Scrambler 400 CV and front 4X4 problem
#1
Hello, my son just bought a Scrambler 400 4x4 1999 (which by the way does not keep up with my Vinson).
The left front wheel stays locked in 4X4. I took it all apart (no book). Found the inner seal spring broken and smashed in the 4x4 rollers (cleaned it up) Found the spring retaining clip for the axle broken in the CV joint (Joint is binding bad, took it apart removed the broken clip and it still binds).
It looks like the pins must magnetically retract go to two wheel drive, can this be checked or when I fix or replace the CV joint do you think my original problem with that wheel staying in 4x4 will be fixed will be fixed?
Also what type of axle oil?? And is there a discount place for CV joints, axle seals, and other Polaris OEM Parts. It looks like this may be a high-maintenance ATV.
Thanks for the input

Sorry about the last post I hit the wrong button When you replace the CV joint and clean everything it should work right.Oh by the way have him get a pipe and clutch kit for the Scrammy and he will smoke your Vinson all these 400s need is a little work and they will out run anything on the trail. And yes they are a high maintanece machine but well worth the effort. He may also need to freshen up the topend to make it run right.

The rollers don't retract magnetically, there is a spring that goes around them that is supposed to hold them in. The magnet grabs the cage, and causes the inner cam to force them out to lock against the inside of the hub.

Thanks Farmr and everyone,
I assumed the spring I found came from the inside of the seal next to the cam assembly but I can see how it went around the rollers in the groove. It was broken a loose inside the hub.
Now can anyone recommend an online discount place for Polaris parts? I need the roller spring, new axle shaft clip/spring and a new axle/cv assembly.
Thanks Paul

I think you could try www.partsland.com or www.discounthondaparts.com and see if they have what you need. I haven't needed enough parts to ever buy any online yet (knock on wood). For the axle/CV joint, I would price one through www.gorilla-axle.com just to see what they cost there. They are a little higher priced than most, but they guarantee the axle, CV joint, and boot for the lifetime of the machine. I got a CV boot from them, tore it by winding barbed wire around the axle, and they sent me a new boot, no questions asked, and even paid to mail it out to me.

PS.
Be VERY careful putting the new spring around the roller cage, not to stretch it any more than is absolutely necessary to get it on. If it gets stretched too much, it can lose tension, and then the hub can kick in suddenly when you are turning a doughnut or trying to powerslide a corner. The Polaris mechanics have a special tool to 'roll' it on without stretching it.

Go to the link below, and look at "front 2" and "front 3" illustrations. These are illustrations out of the service manual that give you specs on hub assembly and everything. Make sure you don't bend the ears on the armature plate during reassembly. You will need the torque values from these illustrations as well.

Here are some additional pages I scanned out of the '99 service manual that deal with that front wheel drive system.
