Thinking about buying the new explorer 400. It looks like for the year 2000, they are using the Magnum 500 tires and frame. Can anyone who has the 2000 400 let me know how you like it. How is the belt holding up? the 4-wheel drive system working? any-other info would be appreciated. They want $5600 otd in Mich. with winch. Had a couple Grizzly's, so I am used to power. Mudden in Mich.

The 00 Xplorer is more based on the Scrambler then the Magnum. The Xplorer uses the concentric drive frame, this gives it 9" of rear travel! 6.7" up front. The tires are the same as the Mag. Its quicker and as fast if not faster than your Grizzly. This bike is very fun for spirited riding! wheelies are no problem at all in low range, with good traction high range wheelies are possible! I've never yet bottumed the suspention, even off of large drop offs. Have yet to do any real serious mudding but, from what I have done the bike appears to be great at it. Wheel speed is instantanous, great for covering anybody too close! I've had no problems with anything including the 4wd system.

It may not be a 2000 but my 98 Xplorer400 is still going great...never any problems except premature brake wear. Very powerful, quicker and faster than the SP500. You can't go wrong.

Thanks for the info from the previous post. Whould the suspention be classified as smooth or harsh? how about the non-ebs clutch? Does it really matter not having it? Has the chain been any hassle? is the back shock adjustable? Mudden in Mich.

Next to the Sportsman 500 the Xplorer 400 is the smoothest riding quad available. The power is very good, on gravel you can break the tires loose at will with the acceleration.

Drive belt life? 4000 miles depending on the amount of pick trucks, hay wagons, and lumber wagons pulled. (use low range below 9 MPH)

EBS is not a factor unless the terrain which you ride on is hilly, then brake pad wear will increase. EBS does rob some top speed if that is a factor.

The chain is not a hassle, it is gauranteed for a year requiring only periodic lubrication. The adjustments are few and accomplished with a minimum of effort.

The shock absorber is adjustable to five different preload settings and lighter or heavier springs are availble if required.

Plus... the 400 2 stroke engine can be started with usually one pull of the Recoil if required. (Try that on your Big Bore Asian Quad)

Mileage will usually average between 15 and 19 mpg with spirited riding depending upon load conditions.

If you like to play in the water all day. (Everglades, bayous) drain the transmission, recoil starter, and hubs at the end of the day.

Fun Factor = Best in it's class for big quad.

P.S. Have the dealer throw in a set of brake pads with the deal.

(Shouldna said that, the lemmings will be attacking soon!)

I hardly ever touch my chains...yep I am stuck with 3 on my 98 model. I just shoot em up avery 2 to 3 rides. Like Thor said its the next best thing to the Sportsman. The only place I really prefer the SP500 is on really ugly terrain at lower speeds, like a loggers newly cut trail for instance.
I personally do not like the EBS. I added a Clutch kit to my Xplorer and love to gas it really hard and then hit the brakes when I need them. With the EBS on the SP500, everytime I let go of the gas it slowed down to fast and gave me motion-sickness!
As for the rear shock...I just adjusted it today because I added one of those seat/storage things and in the big bumps with a passenger it was too soft...so I stiffened it a couple notches.
Here's my last thought...it's a monster in the mud! I even feel that it surpasses the SP500. (I am probably going to get it for that comment but...)
It's a great machine!

Burky 00,I to am from Michigan,Burtom Mi,near Flint.I own a 00 400cc Xplorer. This is one bad a$$ 4x4 quad.Hills offer NO challenge to this beast. It is also great in the mud.4x4 is super. The chain drive[rear] is great with the concentric drive.I installed EBS on mine because I climb hills alot. The accelleration is excellant, throttle response, excellant.Ride is good.I've had mine for 5 wks so far with no problems. You can go about 350-400 miles before filling the injection tank.If you think the Grizz is quick, you aint seen nothing yet, good luck,====BILL

Yea guys, That is supposed to be Mich ( Typo ). We also have a dealer over in Unionville (Schmitts) So its a choice between the explorer and the mag 500. The mags a few hundred more but I do get a winch. Found out the winch doesn't come with the explorer. But then again, its a whole different animal. Thanks for the info.

You sure about the winch? I just picked up a pair of Xplorer 400's last month, got 300 in accessories for one of them and a winch with the other one. I paid 5350 a piece for them here in Minn. By the way, the winches come with roller fairleads this year unlike last year. Xplorers were added to the program in mid March.
