I have a 2001 scrambler 500 4x4 that stalls when you put it in reverse but if you hold the override button in when you put it in reverse it does not stall, but it will when you let go does anybody have any ideas? thank you

yes, the engine stalls, dies, stops running when I put it in reverse but if I hold the override button in, and then shift it into reverse it runs fine, but if I let go of the button the engine stops runing [ only while it is in reverse ] any help would be appreciated. thanks

It has something to do with the ignition retard system and it should idle in reverse and move backward some (with backfiring and sputtering) without the button depressed. I don't think you should try to override it as it is a safety feature. If it was like this when it was new maybe you should play stupid and go to the dealer, they may help you cheaply or may tell you what may be wrong

If you dont mind not having the liminator in reverse, then you can easily override it. All you have to do is unplug a wire. Then to get 4x4 in reverse without holding the button requires spicing some wires. Very easy to do.
