Default Racing a trail modded 400

I went to the dunes this weekend and had a blast. A buddy of mine was egging some of guys we ride with on to run their bikes against mine. (He knew how good it ran after the trail mods and couldn't wait to see their reaction to getting beat.) I wasn't as confident as he was as some of them have really good running machines. I raced about 6 or 7 z400's and kfx 400's and a Cannondale (stock) and a Raptor (stock) and smoked them all. All the people on the sidelines were asking him "what's he got in that thing"???. And he grins and says it's just stock with a pipe and they all said BULLSH**.! I didn't do to good off the line cause it just wanted to dig in but when I hooked up I was already 2 lenghts behind but I just caught up and flew right on by. The race was probably about 6 to 7 hundred feet in length. It was great. I'm just running a basically stock clutch set up with a HPD plain spring. I bet if I had a little higher engagment it would do alot better. Man I love seeing peoples faces when they get beat by a "Polaaariss".

Shawn, if your running the stock s-55 weights on that clutch, go to the brown polaris spring. That's what I have on my wife's trail modded unit with the HPD pipe. It doesnt engage too high and it moves instantly when you nail the throttle. The plain spring is meant to run with the 53 gram weights in that setup, but that decreases the load on the motor some and you dont want that with a ported motor. I think you will really like it. By the way, I am still waiting on your wife........... oh, I mean her cylinder LOL Bubba

A modded Scrambler sure has a lot of shock value, I LOVE IT! I have a similiar set up to you, but I have the complete clutch kit w/ hpd kevlar belt, and its incredible off the line. Are you running paddles? You really should be getting a 2 bike lenth jump on them, not a loss. Those are some very nice looking bikes you have there.

Thanks for the compliments ScramX. I am running 22x11x10 8 paddle Skat-trac haulers. My bike has never hooked up good on take off even when I had just the pipe. I'm going to try a different primary spring. Bubba I had already ordered a Hpd red/yellow spring. I was thinking I just needed more stall on take off. It takes of great with the plain spring on dirt. The red/yellow is 122/239. I think it is the one they use in their aggressive clutch kits. Thanks. Shawn.

The red/yellow should give great results. Dont worry about the high engagement, you'll get used to it and love it.Once you want more put the red in and you'll get a little more then too. If you changed the gear ratio from stock, I would put it back with that big of a paddle. I didnt realize you had that big of a paddle. Too much gear with that big of a tire will pull you down. Even CED geared down with the race mod. Try it first with a spring change before doing anything else. You might be surprised. Oh, and I was just kidding about the wife thing. I dont know you personally and didnt want to upset anyone.Bubba

No problem on the wife thing that is just the way we tease also. Hey I geared it up with a 14 tooth on front and can really tell the top end difference. So you think that it doesn't have enough bottom end now? I know of some guys that have 20" sand sharks and they bog down terribly on bottom end. I went with the 22" cause that's the oem size and thought that it was just too much low end. I can take off fine just as long I don't nail it completely. I totally love the haulers cause they hook up soo good. Thanks. Shawn.

If it dont go when you nail it hard then it doesnt have enough engagement. Try the spring first. I think you might get a good surprise.

Good run but if you mod something you need to come clean. It just makes you look better to most people.
