The raptor beats the Z400 in top end, through the trails and normal riding they're very competitive with each other. I ride my Z400 with a couple raptors and the only place they can lose me is in long flat straights. The Z400 is easier (or seems to be to me) to handle in the curves and whoops because it is lighter. The raptor feels a lot bigger than the Z400 when you ride it, which can be a disadvantage when trying to whip around through trails. If you're a speed freak get a KFX700, rode one of those for the first time yesterday (happy thanksgiving) and it was like a religous experience. Tons of power, and the auto tranny keeps the engine right in the power band ALL THE TIME. The 700 is an awesome hill climber for that reason, you never have to shift to stay in the power up a hill, just work the throttle and keep it from flipping over on you.

Like I said I ride with a couple of them, and from what I've seen that's a problem. They are a 2001 and a 2002. The 2001 makes a bad-sounding clunky noise (loud) when shifting or just riding around sometimes, and on the 2002 the guy just got finished tearing down to find a noise it's been making as well. I'm no expert on them but I do know that the two I ride with both make funny noises that they should not make.
Here's a thought, you can always make a Z400 as fast as a Raptor, but you can't make a Raptor as light as a Z400. . .

The Raptor only has tranny problems in the 01 models. Anything above that and you wont have any problems. I can actually throw my Raptor around like crazy.. It feels just like a z-400 to me but more power. But there equal in the trails.. Both will keep up with eachother just once there is a straightaway the Raptor will pull away.
