Do you like acceleration or top speed?

The point is the 2-4mph that everyone argues about with top end. My quad is better because it goes 74 and yours only goes 72. thats what I was referring to.

Most of the racing I do is uphill in the sand. Racing up a 600 ft hill of sand that is fairly steep you never do reach top speed. but if you cant accelerate quickly your going to get wasted. The raptor has a higher top speed then the yfz450 but racing up hills like we do the yfz is 15-20 quad lengths ahead of the raptor by the time you reach the top of the hill. You mostly accelerate as fast as you can to 3rd or fourth gear and that is as high as you ever get. In the flats a 600 ft drag race might have a different outcome. In the sand acceleration is defintaley the most important

Both if I have a choice! But if I don't, acceleration on a trail bike, and top speed for an open country bike.
My sport bikes get ridden mostly in the desert. While parts of a desert ride will be wide open washes and roads (where you favor top speed), you can quickly find yourself doing a trail ride down a canyon, or on some technical hill climb (where you better have great low end torque). That's why I picked the TRX450R. Lots of low end torque, but a respectable top end to go along with it!! And don't even leave the garage, without great suspension!

I race hare scrambles myself and what I find to work best is smooth acceleration with loads of midrange.
There aren't but a few races where topend even comes into play.

In the desert, the big endurance races (Baja, Vegas to Reno, etc) are all wide open top end events. Trucks and buggies run on the same course, so there isn't any technical single track. On the other hand, AMA District 37 races are run on a lot of motorcycle single track, where you aren't likely to be able to open it up very often.
In any case, you are going to need a real blast of power to pass somebody, when you are choking on their dust.
