Is anyone else a little fed up with the high costs of making a quad race-ready? Don't get me wrong I have been riding quads for 15 years and I have so much more fun on my TRX250R than on any dirtbike. But ATV aftermarket parts manufacturers are charging ridiculous prices for their products. I just spent over $2,000 rebuilding my 250R so I can tell you first hand.........and I bought good products but not the best. A swingarm is at least $600, long travel a-arms $850, long travel shocks $1,000 +, rear shock $750 not to mention a ton of other "must haves" like nerfs, steering stem, bumbers etc. All my friends do to their dirtbikes to make them race ready is a pipe, jetting, Renthal bars, and they have the rear shock revalved. I hate to say it but the next off-road vehice I buy will be a dirtbike. I'm not trying to sound like a whiner, I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

what can we do?

prices are ridiculous, and until every family owns aan ATV....it will probably stay that way.

1 way to save money tho...is to order all your mods at one time from the same place....then have them start giving you discounts

I got my elka's, a-arms, rear axle for 2300....which wasnt too bad compared to the 2900 retail

 

I've got to hand it to Yamaha for making the YFZ almost race-ready but no one I have ever met left their quad completely stock. I know fellow racers that went and bought a quad brand new and ordered over $3,000 worth of parts to make it race ready the very day they brought it home----and that is just ridiculous. I'm gonna run my 250R as long as I can untill it needs another major rebuild. Then I'm just gonna park it in my garage, throw a cover over it and buy a CRF450 dirtbike.

 

i've wondered why we can't buy a racer package or 'kit quad'. meaning, since we replace A-arms, shocks, axle, and sometimes swingarm... those parts don't come as a part of the 'kit' and you get an appropriate discount to match.

 

It's kinda funny that the people that are charging you an arm and a leg for parts are the same ones that say they can't understand why the sport isn't growing as fast as they'd like;Wake up.............Not everyone has the kind of money it takes to build a serious race quad so therefore people look elsewhere for a better bang for the buck.The aftermarket companies are to blame for slow progress in the growth of the sport.Once again the almighty $$ rules.I'll stop whining now as this is a sore subjectfor me.......................

 

i feel it to. what the mfg. should do is make the bike with longer axle,a-arms, all the mods like that sell them for the same price and give the aftermarket guys a cut of the money from the new bike that you bought. Thats just my 2cents

 

We whine, yet its not like we are the only ones that have a right to. Dirt bikes are expensive to upgrade. So are road bikes, cruisers, cars, trucks, etc. You can easily spend thousands on an ignition system for a car. We arent being unfairly treated, because everything is expensive.

 

MADDOG, your right in saying that mods are expensive for any form of motorsports. However, it takes a lot fewer modifications to competeitively race a dirtbike than it does a quad. Like I noted earier, to race a bike all you need is a pipe, jetting, bars, and suspension tuning. But for a quad you are looking at another 2-3 grand in after market parts. Annual ATV sales are higher than dirtbike and streetbike sales combined and yet for some reason they get more $$$ for research and development than quads.

 

Thats a good point about the mx bikes, but they also have tremendous popularity in the tv world and many more spectators and sponsors involved.
