Just my 2 cents worth here. I think the 400ex is a quality quad. Well designed and built. I here all the negatives like air cooled, single overhead cam, no reverse. I have raced a lot of the z/kfx 400s and the difference is so small that it comes down to who hooks up better. I win some I lose some but never by much. I quess what I'm saying is that with all the latest technology the 400ex still hangs with the other 400s.

I know 5 ppl who have a 400ex and never had a problem. they seem indestructible weather u bore them out or not. (and the 400ex seems to hold more weight than n e other sport wheeler)

Complaints heard here about he 400ex:
Air cooled - Why is this bad? So it runs a little hotter, no big deal. You dont have any hoses or fluid levels to worry about and send you back to the trailer early. Even guys running a 465 big bore are doing it all on air cooling with no overheating problems. Engines that small dont always need it. Not to mention the weight savings you have without liquid cooling.
SOHC - Again, I dont see the issue. Its a preference thing. If you like torque and smooth power acrossed the board, you like fewer cams. If you want high rpm power hits that are harder to control but might edge you out in a drag race, go with a dohc. Plus you only have to buy one cam to upgrade so its about 1/2 the cost.
No reverse - This machine is small and light enough to be picked up if necessary. The warrior was the only quad to have reverse for the longest time, its a recent development. I only use it on my quad because its there. If I didnt have it all I would have to do is pay a little better attention to where I park.
Hondas are reliable because they are simple. The 400ex is bulletproof compared to the kawisukicats. Upgrades are cheap and you can get close the same power from each. The honda is usually cheaper in the showroom too.
All in all both bikes are great. But I wouldnt count the ex out just because of the little things listed above.
