400EX or 250R
The choice was between a 400ex and a 250r. I dono how the yfz got into this. Even if the yfz was part of the thread consider this
$7500 out the door price of a yfz
MINUS
$3500 for a decent 250r
$2000 for a new cyl/pipe setup
...still leaves me with $2000 to upgrade the suspension or fix that "15 year old quad" (with a brand new engine) should anything ever brake.

250r is the better choice.....
dollar for dollar.....
i can personaly make a honda 250r .020 cylinder (not aftermarket pro-cross) run better than any 310 kit...... (in a drag race)...
you can go along way with a stock cylinder.... don't be fooled....
the transmission's on the 250r are alot better than the 400ex
the 400ex is air cooled (take this into consider..)
If your going to MX race MAYBE..... But other than that go buy the 250r......

Yes I have a 400ex but was thinking of trading for an 89' 250R.. And just wanted some feed back on others opinions.. If I wanted to buy a YFZ I wouldnt have posted this thread.. If I wanted to sit on a board I can go to the lumber yard....Thanks to all that has posted to the 400ex & 250R ?...

TRX250R Sir Spudss. Unbeatable handling. And you don't have to spend a billion dollars to get it race ready like most people
say. The people out there with $20,000 R's have every single part aftermarket and ultra light in weight...like titanium or aluminum
or something like that. Build a very good 330 or 350 from Curtis Sparks, along with some awesome reeds like G3's. Get that baby dialed
in and watch the thumpers fall out of sight in your roost. The 250R is capable of WAY more power than any 500EX, 416,440 etc you name
it.

I am not sure how much their big bore kits cost off hand, it should be on their website. I've heard Sparks was behind on making their
bb kits by a few months or something..I could be wrong though. Check sparksracing.com - The reeds and torque spacer are around $100
which is about the same as other reeds. I would recommend getting their intake also, down the road though. Check out 1dirracing.com
The 250R can be just as reliable as a four stroke....it depends on how they were taken care of in the past. The R I own is an 86
which was their first year and the cylinder is only .020 over and runs like a champ and has a lot of compression. The guy I bought
it from was the original owner and when he bought it he ran it 20:1 like the manual said. Then it was ran 32:1 with Yamalube which
is still pretty rich. I raced a big bore 400EX awhile ago and absolutely killed it. No contest. The mods I had were:
Scott's Cylinder(.020 over bore over std, mild porting)
Wiseco Pro Lite piston
'89 CR250R head gasket
ESR TRX5 Full Exhaust
K&N Air Filter w/o lid
36mm Kiehin PWK carb
G3 Power Curve Reeds w/ 12mm Torque Spacer
18" Razr MX rear's w/ 14/38 gearing

Almost any cylinder 'kit' from any big name shop is going to be around $2000. A little more if you want the powervalve. The difference between a 'kit' and just the cylinder is most kits have a pipe, silencer, carb and whatever else you need to make the cylinder run the way it should. I'd go with something from Eddie Sanders Racing or LRD Performance. The PC 2000 cylinders from Duncan Racing also look really sweet. CTracing has a variety of kits and have a good website. I have heard good things about Sparks Racing although they wouldnt be my first choice. Hope to see you on a 250r soon.
