Default 1986-1987 Honda 250x help

Okay, I was given a 1986-1987 honda 250x that I am trying to put a headlight on...i asked around and was told that that model came stock with a headlight. does anyone have any idea as to where I can download the service manual for this quad? If not, does anyone own one and know if there is a suitable power supply for a headlight, and where it is?

Yes there is a headlight on these atvs. The power for the light comes from the stator (behind the flywheel). There should be a wire coming out from the stator assembly that you can wire into.Is there not a switch on the handle bar for your light?

nope, no switch...the quad was a gift, I suppose the people that had it before me did some mods to it...if it came down to it and they changed the stator, how hard would it be for me to change the stator, considering I have never done it before?

The stator is on the left side(shifter side) of the motor, your boot will probably rub the round cover that the stator is behind. The stator cover will have about 6 bolts holding it on.Check and see what wires are coming out of this cover. The book says that the lighting wires are white with a yellow line on it and the other wire is green.you might check these wires for any current if they have current then the stator is working. You might be able to stick a test light to each of these wires and see if it lights up and if it does then you are getting current.motor has got to be running to check for current in these wires. If wires dont have current then you will need to pull side cover off.this is where you will find the stator(generator).most stators are behind the flywheel but for some odd reason on the pictures I've been looking at, it looks like this stator is on the outside of the flywheel.the stator will be an object that has alot of copper wires wrapped around it.Hope I havent confused you.
