i have a 99 400ex that i got a a dealt hardly has any riding on. any who im still learing all this stuff . it not running quite rite i don't know how to pin it it not boogy or anything it just doesn't feel right and it ticking a little . any ideas * aka the dumb girl*

 

Basic maintenance:

Keep the air filter cleaned and oiled.

Keep up on the oil changes. Pick an API SG/JASO MA motorcycle oil. http://www.atvriders.com/articles/oilchange400ex.html


Valve adjustments. If it is typical, it probably has never had a valve adjustment. Should have been done at 20 hours, then every 100 hours after that. This is important....might be the cause of the ticking!

Clean the carburator. If it still runs bad after that, consider investigating whether it is properly jetted.

Keep the chain adjusted and lubed.

Not much more complicated than that......
