Depends on riding conditions. Moving from a 250 to a 700 raptor mapbe too big of a jump but, it's a great all around quad. 400ex is great trail and all around quad and they are found all over if looking for a used quads.

I love my yfz. Woods ridding is fine as long as it's not too slow a technical. The 450's are high geared and it makes for alot of clutch work if it's too slow. The biggest thing is that they get HOT FAST and you have to get 'em opened up to get some air flowing.

I do alot of wooded trails and rocky hills as well. Most of our trails you travel in 2nd and 3rd then down to first to cross a creek or large hill then back up to 3rd on the trails. It does GREAT for that. Like I said the 450's are fine you just can't spend too much time crossing a creek or crawling out of a canyon because they get too hot for comfort and the clutch work is a pain.

The 700 raptor excel's where the 450's leave off. They don't mind the lugging as much but, as I said that is a HUGE jump from your previous ride. That may not be an issue for you but if it is, the air cooled 400ex is a good middle of the road and it is the trail king.

Any of the great trail quads will be a big improvement, plus any of them will easily outhandle that 500+ pound KFX tank! Sure, it's a muscle car and it goes fast in a straight line...but throw in a few turns and you will easily outclass him. Got to wonder WTF Kawi was thinking when they designed that one....

The 400's handle excellent, and have very controlable power. I have never liked the ergonomics of the Raptor 700, but it may be a good choice for you as well. Avoid the Raptor 660, they didn't quite get it right with that one.

A step up from those are the 450's. The beauty of the 450's is that they are very light weight and have a very favorable weight/power ratio! These engines like to rev however, so I don't like them for slow tight trails, where you would end up doing a lot of annoying clutch slipping.

I personally dont like the 400ex because of it low top speed and its not water cooled i helped my cousin put a street bike motor in his mojave and we took it out for a test ride caught up 2 a 400ex and started racing and we slautered it

True, top speed is down on the EX by today's standards, but it will outhandle anything there is on a tight trail (except maybe a 300EX). But, depends on where you ride.

From your other post, you seem to be obsessed with speed...but keep in mind that the frame design and suspension have to be able to handle that speed..."ametures talk speed, pros talk handling"!

Well of course you did. A street bike motor in anything would outrun an atv In a drag race. For me the air cooling was a plus in the trails. Didn't get near as hot on the legs as my 450 does but, then again it don't put off that much heat. Also, my piped ex would smoke a buddies Raptor 450 my a long shot. They may not have top speed but, they are not slow.

But would a 400ex keep up with my friends kfx 700 on a wide open trail its really not any fun ridding when your always playin catch up and i dont wana spend the money 2 get a quad that isnt any faster than my mojave........... the street bike motor was only a 250 the only real difference between the 2 motors was the 6th gear

Don't know much about the kfx 700. No a 400ex will not be as fast as one but, it will be much faster than the mojave. Sounds like you just wanting to be fast. If that's the case you will be dissapointed until you are at the top. If you have the money I'd go with the 700 raptor or the 450. 450's I think feel faster because they are lightweight and can be thrown around easy.
