The 250R is a great machine. So is the EX. Remember, if you buy it from the showroom, it is new. EVERYTHING is new. The bearings, brakes, tires, cables, hand grips, plastic, skid plates, and everything is straight.
Instead of buying someones headaches or mistakes, you are buying a clean slate.
Make sure you consider this in your decision.
You can pay cash, pick up your machine and ride it. You shouldn't have to repair or inspect it. Ride and maintain it.
Enjoy your decision either way. You are buying one of the premier sport quads available.......

You must also remember, many a 250R have been raced so they have been beaten and abused.

Id go with the 400EX. They are great machines. I am looking at selling my High maintanance, tempramental suzuki LT 250 R, so i can buy a new quad. Then i can keep it for years to come and i know what has been done to it.

Hey man, I have had quite a few quads in the past and then went to race bikes gsxr750 ,zx7 ect; well my point is, is that I didn't want to go back to quads doing only 60-70mph when I can do 160-170mph on a my gsxr. Well I grew up a little and got a family. Well I don't want my kid growing up being as recklace as his dad so I decided to go back to quads. I waited untill a new quad came out and bought my 400ex off the show room floor. I'm am vary content and it is extremely well rounded. I can ride around with my son without throwing him off. Can teach my brother to ride easier than the 250r and my wife loves it! Well to make a vary long story short even in stock form this quad rocks. There are vary if any short falls that I have found yet. I've owned 250r's, Lt 250, blaster, and have ridden everything else in the past. If you decide to get one in the near future I would go w/ the 400ex. You won't be dissapointed and it can do everything the 250r can do. And I'll say that without hesitating. As far as the bike goes well I've heard all the reviews and such about the comparison between the two and from my personal experience so far the best comparison I have had was on a drag strip. Me a stock 400ex against an fmf piped 250r, a Nacs fully modified 250r , and a 440 big bore modified with whit brothers es and rev kit 400ex. Of course the after several drags about 6 or 7 the distance and order were always the same. Keep in mind all of us were experienced locals on this track if I may be so bold. Of course the monster 440 was out front after an 1/8 of a mile 1 1/2 bike lengths behind him the Nacs 250r. About 1 bike length behind him was me on the 400ex stock and sometimes deadeven or about 1/2 -1 bike length behind was the fmf 250r. Now you can say anything you want and there are about 1,000,000. variables that have to do with this line up at the finish. But my point is that you wont be dissapointed. Oh I almost forgot I talked to TC racing on the phone and the mechanic told me over the phone not to get their 440 big bore kit because if you were going to go through all the trouble to bore your cases 1mm for just a 440 which he said wasn't a tremendous power gain than you should go with their 480big bore which he said would make the 440 look pretty weak in comparison. And it was only 50 more dollars. I think as of yet they are the only ones that make a 480 so far because if you race that puts you in the open class, but he told me he has built several 480's already at about 52-62hp and he said as long as you change the oil that there was no more danger of destroying your engine than with the stock job. 4 strokes are diffent people remember they don't rev as hard so they don't heat up as bad as 2 strokes so the danger isn't as great as when you bore a 2 stroke and get the paper thin cylinder walls.

cctman, Anybody who's read my posts knows I'm no engine builder, so take this with a grain of salt, but here's what I've heard on the EX & big bore kits. The rocker arms are a weak link in the motor. For any kind of longevity you have to do a whole bunch of head work to withstand the extra pounding from the heavyer piston, added compression, etc. That might be ok if you're a total gear head or factory racer, but for Joe Trailrider it's a little more hassle than it's worth. Most riders who have got to have a 65 hp quad are going to go for a pumped up Banshee for half the cost.
