I am interested in buying a new bike. I have 3 in mind-honda 400ex, and the 2 polaris scramber models. Any input on performance, reliability, handling, etc. will be greatly appreciated. I like to trail-ride and hillclimb-also out and out speed is a must. I plan on upgrading which ever i end up with.

I have a 99 scrambler 500 4x4 and a y2k 400ex. I have no real complaints on either except it's below 0 here and the honda doesn't like it.(won't start). polaris is great for muddin and it's fast, takes bumps great but lacks in the jumping. It's great for trail riding, just hit the gas and go and reverse is a +. Honda is very fast and the 5 speed kicks. It leaves the polaris in a drag at about 40 feet when the honda is revvin in 2nd. It jumps great pulls the front end up in every gear and it's ok in the mud. I changed the rear tires to blackwaters for more grab in the mud. The only problem I had with the poaris is I, well a friend - (never let them ride your quads) bent the front A arm and I had to replace it and the front drive shaft pulled out of it's joint in the boot, but the dealer had the parts and now its back running. I strongly recomend replacing the boot guards with steel!!
There is a lot more aftermarket stuff for the honda.

All are great quads. If you are a jumper the 400EX is great. But for hillclimbs the Scramblers are hard to beat. You say you will tinker with them. I don't know how fast you want to go but the Scrambler 400 is a powerhouse with just a few mods.

If you are looking for a SPORT quad, which is why i assume you are in this forum, i recommend the 400EX before the polaris's. uh and the 400EX is already a powerhouse, and witha few mods will rip even more ***!! well bye!

If you plan on upgrading, I would go with the 400 polaris. Cost less to add mods, go with 4x4 if you think you will need more traction and don`t mind for the weight of it. If you want the 4x4, I would take the 500 4 stroke. I own a 95 srambler 400 4x4, I really like it. But I just got it back from the dealer. (top end rebuild) I think that`s the only thing I had to do. I sometime wish I had more low end torque on mine but not aften enough. I can`t speak for the 400EX since I have never drive one But I`m sure that it is a great bike, alot different. Try each of them.

They are both good bikes but it sounds like the scrambler 400 is a better fit since you didnt mention MX riding. The scrambler has a nicer ride, more traction (4WD), Auto, Reverse, and responds to mods better for less money. Reliability isnt an issue, they will both last with regular maintenance. 2 strokes are NOT time bombs! everybody makes a lemon now and then though. The scrambler can also handle the more nastier conditions better

Have fun!

Comparing the 400 Polaris & the 400 Honda is like comparing a 400 Pontiac to a 400 Chrysler. They may be the same size but the Pontiac (Polaris) is a lot more motor with far more potential & at less cost. Don't listen to Ranger & Stocker, they don't own quads. Their mommies are afraid they might hurt themselves. Stupid acne infested kids who sit around playing on the 'puter wishing they had a quad all the while probably applying the handbrake to one another....

I know the 400EX is a great quad. My brother had one. But great quad or not it doesn't change the fact that you & your boyfriend stocker are idiots. Also, you & stocker both called me a duesch ( whatever that is? looks German) before I said too much. Stocker is right. I am biased. I don't like little turds like you guys that get on here and pop off with the security the web offers. I'm willing to bet you & stocker don't say things like that to people's face. I don't know why I keep getting the impression you guys ride trail 70 dirtbikes & just pretend on here...
