Default NEW to ATVs

Hello,

I am new to this forum and i am becoming interested in ATVs and I would like to get one I am 13, 100lbs, 4'11 I have no idea if I should get automatic or manual or pay for fully independant suspension or anything like that. I have been using my grandpas like 04 arctic cat 400cc utility quad and i like that. I do about 50 on it and just ride around the ranch on the dirt road. My friend says i need about a 250-350cc atv. I am pretty cheap so I could only spend around 1.2-1.5k. Any suggestions or anything greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

The Yamaha Raptor 250 would be absolutely perfect for you! It handles great and is ultralight. Other great machines in the intermediate class are the Honda 300EX and 250EX.

Sounds like you are on the small side. Are you likely to grow a lot in the very near future???? If so, then you might want to get a machine in the 400 class that you can grow into, like the Honda 400EX or Suzuki Z400.

Real sport quads have manual transmissions, so just forget about anything that is automatic!

As for IRS, there are only two choices. The Honda 700 which is way way to big of a pig for you, and the Polaris which has its share of problems. You only need IRS anyway, if you constantly ride extremely rocky or rutted trails.

At your age and size the Raptor 250 would be perfect, but it is also out of your price range. Your best bet would be an older 250 class sport quad such as a 250X, Mojave, Quadsport, or 300EX. The 300 is still in production nad there is a good aftermarket for it, so that is probably the best bet in your price range. Be careful out there!

There is nothing wrong with the quads that were made from 90-95. They won't be as up to date as the new ones but as long as it runs.

The Yamaha Blaster/Warrior are fun to ride and there are plenty of them out there for sale.

Of the 3, The Raptor 350 would be the best choice. But staying in your price range with the 1st 2 I would pick the Warrior. The Raptor 350 and the Warrior are basically the same thing. The Raptor being the updated version.

The Blaster has more room to upgrade and make it faster but you would be spending over 1500 on the Blaster after you buy new tires, chain, bars, and grips. A quad needing all of that, chances are there are more problems than what is stated, not saying the person is lying but they may not know...YET

Don't forget to haggle them down. It's the classifieds, you can probably get them to take nearly $100 or more off of their price.

I'd probably go with the Warrior and just haggle him a bit (more parts!).

I felt REALLY cramped when I sat on a Raptor 350 (same as the warrior). Mind you that was when I was 14 (about 2 weeks before I'm 15) (and I'm now close to 16). When I was 14 though, I was about 5 foot 9, 160lbs.

Avoid the Warrior! I was riding a Warrior before you were born, and I can tell you first hand that it is poorly designed. Handles like a brick....

The Blaster on the other hand is a perfect size for you, and pure fun! You have to do all that messing becasue it is a 2-stroke, but this is an intermediate quad that you will probably only be riding for a few years, so it will be good experience.
