Default thinking of getting a sport quad

But witch one?
I went ridding today with frank wilson (the national hill climbing champ) he was ridding a stock 250R and was eating up our steepest hill about 75% steep and 200 yds long. So I was thinking of trying to find a 250R but dont want a 2 stroke so what do you sagest I was thinking along the lines of a 660 raptor. Dose any one think a raptor could handle a hill like this? Most of my ridding will be trail ridding and steep hills. I want a 4 stroke that I can hop the front end over mud holes and ride some wheelies with and stable enugh to eat up EXTREAMLY steep hills. I dont know if something like a 400ex would have the power to get up some of these hills. But I dont know because I've never owend a sport quad.
Also can some one tell me how many HP a raptor has?

A Raptor, DS650, Z400 or even the 400ex can all handle the steep hills. I have made a few steep climbs on my Warrior, so I know all the mentioned will not have a problem with them. I plan on getting a Z400 , just waiting to see how the Predators turn out.

The Raptor, or any of several other machines would be very competive with the right rider on board. With its relatively light front end, the Raptor certainly can be made to lift its front end with no problem...in fact, any problem may be keeping the frond end on the ground
Some riders like to run an extended swing arm for that reason. Also the right tires make a huge difference in maintaining traction in hill climbing.

tommyboy, don't be put off by 2 strokes. They make the most bang for the buck - although 250Rs a re pretty pricy and the NEWEST you gcould get will be 13 years old. Consider a Banshee.

If you must have a 4 stroke naturally the more power the better. The Raptor is a little short to be a good hillclimber - it needs a longer swingarm. A DS650 would work well for that. The 400s could use a little more power but I think on dirt they will all get you up there. Sand is another story, though.

For hill climbing I would agree that a 2-stroke is the way to go do to it can rev quicker than a 4-stroke. If however you prefer a 4-stroke go with a Cannondale Cannibal you get the best of both world 2-stroke power out of a 4-stroke or go with the 250r. If you want a new 2-stroke go with the banshee or this new GasGas 300 that will be out in the next 2-3 weeks.

My 2 cents..... I say go with the Raptor 1st, Z400 or maybe a new Predator 2nd choice. But definitely expect to get an extended swingarm in either case.

Yes I was thinking about going with the raptor and putting a longer swing arm on it and peping it up to push all the HP that I can. I like the raptor because it has reverse and you dont have to kick start it. This is gonna be the first time I really put money into a sport quad so can any one tell me how many HP a stock raptor has and how many I can get out of it? Also how much is it gonna cast me to do these mods? I'll have to just do a little at a time but It's something I really want to do.. OH one more thing I am a very large person (6ft3, very large bones, and I'm into power lifting so I weigh over 300lbs) but not all fat,,, do you think i would fit a raptor or am I to big?

I am 5'10" 240 and feel good on my Warrior, you being that tall may want to go with the DS650 Its well suited for larger people. My friend rides a raptor he is about 6'1". He seems to like it quite well.

Tommyboy, naturally it's best for you to go and at least sit on all the quads you are thinking about buying. Being a big guy you may find 400ex and z400 a litltle small for you. The DS650 is a large machine and big guys like them for that reason. I ride a Banshee and a warrior which fits me pretty good and I'm a pretty big guy (not tall, just big ).

Really, you should really think about the DS650. Oh, the Banshee is kickstart but it is so easy it should even be a consideration just in case you were wondering Usually it takes 5 or 10 kicks to get it going if it's been sitting several days, 2 or 3 kicks if it's been sitting a day and 1 kick if it has been riunning recently.
