1st tune-up for Z400???
My dealer told me bring my new Z400 in for a "overall" tune-up after 4 tanks of gas. Is this really necessary? The main concern would be the valve adjustment, but I'm not too keen on having a perfectly brand new engine broken into this early in the game! Please advise

I believe the Z/KFX 400 uses the shim in bucket type of valve adjustment. This is a little more complicated that the regular lock nut and screw type. Theye is also less wear and need for adjustment. I would wait until you notice that it does not start as quick or you notice a little valvetrain noise. If you wait until this time it should be awhile before it needs it again. If you want to take it in though it will not hurt anything except your wallet.

I believe that you should adjust the valves at 20 hours or so. Thats probly about 4 tanks of gas like your dealer said..
The valves will get a groove in them where they mate to the seat. This will decrease the the valve clearance. If the clearance gets too small you can burn a valve, wipe out a cam or get valve float. Adjusting the valves is pretty important in a new motor. Once the valve gets seated the recession will slow or stop and valve adjustments can be done less frequently.
I would keep an eye on it for the first 100 hours or so. Check/adjust at 20 hours, 50 hours and 100 hours. Then maybe every 200 hours after that.
