Will it do any harm to the transmission by not using the clutch on my 400ex when shifting gears. I have heard both sides can any one shed any light on the matter? Thanks in advance!

I am not saying power shifting (which in my mind is shifting with out letting off the gas). Just shifting while letting off the gas like the old 185's and 110's used to be without disengaging the clutch.

Yes they are. The only reason I am asking, I have had some friends that race motocross say they don't use the clutch when shifting just when stopping and starting just wondered if it works the same with the ex. It shifts smooth when you do it but I don't want to do any damage. Thanks

Its all timing, but yes you can do it. Make sure you slam it into gear though, you dont want to blow a tranny.

why would you do that? what do you think they put a clutch lever on there for in the first place????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????
use it, or you may be sitting in front of the TV watching soaps, swearing in your head... while your buddies are out riding without you because your quad is in the shop getting the tranny replaced.
just a thought...

I almost never use my clutch to shift when racing. I use it if I need to downshift twice going into a hairpin. I have never had transmission problems, but it is an abusive technique. I agree with dabeechman it is all timing, and that is probably a big part of why I have never had problems.

Thanks AdamSmith, I was hoping some racers would comment. I have talked to some people that I know that race motocross and one guy in particular said he never uses the clutch on his bike except to stop and start. He also has never had a tranny problem in the last 10 years. Thanks for the advice!
