what would be better?
Carb would be cheaper, because cams would also need a cdi box.
Anyone runing a bigger carb on a piped Z with out cams?

You don't need a new CDI to feel the benefit of the cams. The cams cost around $250, but what carb are you looking at getting??

If you're going to replace the carb with anything worthwhile, then it will be more than the cams.

Cams and CDI are a good combo. Carb is nice alone, or even better with the other two together.

I'd think you'd notice the best improvement with the carb alone. Then cams and CDI later. I did cams first, and I can tell the little 36mm CV carb is straining to keep up.

I'd look for an FCR39 or FCR40 carb. Lots of discussion on the Z400 board that is banned from being posted as a link on this site. (junk!)

LOL, I know what you mean about the little carb that tries to keep up,and for me its a 440! Get the FCR40mm if you are going to get a new carb, and yes it stinks we can't post a link to the "other" site because it is a very helpful place!

I heard that you hit the rev limiter to easily with cams.

Ya, so shift.

I got the Dyna ignition, and in reality I can't tell a difference with the timing curves. Probably due to the stock carb. But, in reality if you could find a cheap module that just raised the rev limiter to 10.5k, that would be all you'd need.

But, even with cams you're not going to hit the rev limiter in 4th or 5th. 1st, 2nd and 3rd, no problem, even stock with the proper jetting.

I would get the carb, because you will do the cams later, and it will "need" the carb then.If you do the carb, you won't "need" the cams. The carb will really wake it up. I tried my FCR39 off the 440ex and it rips.
