It's a 91. Whatever pipe you get, go with their complete engine package. The first think you should do is find out who does a reed cage for an 87. The 87's are different from the rest. The reed cage is huge! From what I've read, it's more of a top end engine.

As for the wiring, I bought mine with the tether all ready on it. I guess trace the ignition wires, and figure out which one is the ground. I assume a Pro Design tether would come with general instructions. I assume you're going to install a tether.

All my engine work is from FTZ. I assume they will do know what to do with an 87 to make it work for whatever type of riding/racing you plan to do. LRD would be my second choice.

Just installed a Paul Turner mid range pipe & Fat Boy silencer on my 87 LT tonight. I got the show chrome one, and the finish is superb. It sounds great, not too loud but real beefy. They sent jets with the pipe, asking me my weight, altitude, and engine mods. Previously I had a real old DG pipe that had all the bends like the factory one: it worked better than the stocker but not by a whole lot. The Paul Turner pipe absolutely RIPS!! I have a Wiseco piston .080 over, cleaned up the casting flash, 39 PWK carb, open airbox K&N and aftermarket reeds, and 170 psi compression. Man is it responsive now, like a whole new wheeler. No hard transition, just real strong right off the bottom and huge killer powerband. I can't wait to get back to ol' Choke Cherry hill in a couple of weeks. Mark me down for the Paul Turner stuff from Duncan--I am impressed.

Was400: For pictures, the Duncan racing site has real nice pix of a Quadracer with this pipe. Also, Quadracer.com has pix of his '90 with this exact pipe. It doesn't stick out much at all--I don't anticipate any "Banshee burns" from which I already sport a permanent signature. The expansion chamber is fat but not like the big huge FTZ pipe. PT also has a "Hi-Rev" pipe but sounds to be way more peaky, and all things considered even with me almost exclusively riding sand, they recommended this one. As far as the Raptor comparison, with me 200 lbs on the LT and wife 130 lbs on the Raptor, on the flat in sand, it was close for a couple of gears but she would pull me top end. Raptor has airbox mods, K&N and jets & geared down, that's it. Now, with the pipe change, I bet money I will run away from it. I went to order an LRD pipe and they were backordered, out a few weeks and I ended up with the PT. Real happy I did.

The best thing you can do is to stick with one shop for the pipe and engine porting. They do their pipes and porting to work together. If you are not getting a full race porting job, I wouldn't get any of the fatter pipes.
