Jetting for Z400
#1
Hey everyone I know im a polaris man but got a question for brother who has a Z400. He has put a White Bros silencer and had them put a jet kit in when bought it. It started foulin plugs bad and wouldnt start. He took it back and like I suggested they had put too big of jet it(165). Well they backed it down to I believe a (162). It is still foulin plugs not as quick but cant give a good five or six hour ride before it does eat one. It starts okay now though. Any insight on what need to do? Please help cause I dont care but you Suzuki guys might the fact that he said this weekend "if it keeps it up im pushin it off a cliff and going back to honda"

Whats his elevation? What is the filter, air box lid on or off, holes in the box, pilot jet, needle position, air screw position?
If he dosesn't know any of this, just have him take it back and have them try again.....

Well I know that elevation is missouri elevation so not a factor....air box lid is on...filter is factory cause hasnt bought k&n for it cause doesnt wanna spend 120 for extension as far as the pilot, air, and needle dont know cause dealer did it all

Missouri Elevation dosen't matter? You still need to know what elevation it is to jet it properly. Is he going to fix it? If he is he better be able to pull the carb to access the jets and needles to identify them.
I need a head gasket for a Chevy, do you have one?

All these freakin stealers that are putting jet kits in stock and/or just pipe Zs should be shot.
Tell him to do this:
1. Remove the snorkle cover from the snorkle. It's a little cover over the end of the snorkle coming out of the airbox. That will be the biggest gain.
2. Put in a 145 MIKUNI main jet (should be 5-7 bucks tops). 165 is WAY too huge, even for no airbox lid and pipe, it's pushing it. If it's a dynojet kit, tell him to get his money back for it... if he can't, put the smallest main in the kit in.
3. He should have gotten a new adjustable needle for the carb to. Put it on the 4th clip from the top (closer to the tapered end).
4. If his pilot is stock, turn it to 3.5 turns out. Better yet, buy a 25 pilot and set it at about 2.5 to 3 turns out.
Lastley, never buy a jet kit. You get $15 worth of parts for $75 and apparently their numbering scheme is different than genunie Mikuni.
Although it shouldn't be on the Z since the small mikuni and dynojets both are measured by opening of the jet? Hex mikunis are different than Dynojet, but I'm not convinced the round Mikunis are.
I can't believe he hasn't taken it back to the dealer. Just to keep them busy and get his money's worth. Most of those idjuts couldn't jet a carb if their life depended on it.
If you can't find the right main jet, try a Yamaha dealer. The rappy uses the same jets as the Z. Ask for "Small round mikuni 145 main jet". If he plans on punching holes in the airbox lid, while you're there also pick up a 150, 155 and 160.

Dodge, your bro's dealer sounds like a joke. If you run into any more problems, I'd ask some of guys in this forum (who live around you) for help tuning the Z. Buy a few jets, and for $50 bucks I'm sure they'd help him out.

A 165 may not be too huge!! Dynojet sizes are different than Mikuni. I'm at 1200' and I run a 160!! That's for a slip-on , Uni filter, lid off and snorkle removed. Thing runs STRONG!!! Pull the carb & check the main jet size, the pilot size, the needle setting, and the mixture screw. It sounds like the dealer is a real winner so I would check it all for myself to make sure I know what I have. Any problems just ask we'll all be happy to help ya out. Keep us posted.........
