LT500 Compression advice
#1
i just have question regarding the compression on my zilla
i have a 87, and have been thinking about o-ringing the head. (my dad has a lathe). what i need to know is, will that affect the compression ratio to much?
it is at the max bore i think (i bought it that way) it does have reeds, and lookslike some one has taken a dremel tool to the intake tract.
one more question. i posted this on another thread, but i dont think anyone saw it. my water pump leaks on it (the weep hole). it always has since i owned it, and the guy who owned it before me says it did for him also. it has new seals, new impeller, all new except the shaft. (i have one on order nowas i broke the f*&in thing trying to get the impeller of) i dont know why it chose to stick this time....
anyway, why does it constantly seep? i have read that they come from the factory with bars leak in the cooling system. do i need to put that in my cooling system also? i am just tired of it constantly leaking!
thanks guys

check my post called zilla water leak i got loads of good advise from people,
im just wondering if my problems have started cos i ran the zilla on plain old tap water instead of the proper coolant,

Depends on what's already been done to the cylinder head whether or not it would have a detrimental effect on compression.
If the head is stock (Hasn't been milled), You'll lose about .050" by removing the head gasket and using Orings... which is a good thing. I wouldn't exceed ~185psi cranking compression. It all depends on your altitude, and your tolerance for buying big $$ fuel (110 octane)
It's always a good idea to run high octane fuel in this motor, as they are prone to detonate... too much detonation = kaboom!
it is NOT normal for the H2O pump to leak/seep/etc.
If you've replaced the mechanical seal, the shaft could be the lingering problem... Replace the entire unit and it should stop.... As UK mentioned, do a search on this topic as there should be some pretty good info out there...
Don't use bars leak either!
Good luck
