z400 jet questions?
#1
I was just going to do a couple of small mods to mine, filter, remove the snorkel and possibly open up the air box a little. I know how carburetors work and everything but that is on a 2-stroke. I know how to change the main jet and the pilot jet. I am just wondering about the needle adjustment. I was reading somewhere about putting washers under the needle to get the needle higher. Where do I get these washers? or is there a new needle I can buy where I can just use a clip like a normal carb?
Also, Does the stock carb take a differant style jet than a 2 stroke mikuni. I just want to know so I have the right parts when I take it apart. I do know what I'm doing I just don't know much about 4-stroke carbs.
thanks,
chuck

I put washers (hardware store) under my needle because, at the time, no one sold the adjustable needle outside of buying an overprice jet kit. Nowadays I think you can get the needle separately for $15.
The carb takes Mikuni small round head jets.

I was looking at your site before. Do I have to use a certain washer or can I just get one that will let the neeld go through it? Where is a good place to get/order jets from?

when I first bought my Z I removed the air box lid and installed a 155 mj. It ran great, noticable power gain. I did nothing with the needle, air screw, or pilot jet.
The screws on the bowl will not come out easily. Try an impact screwdriver. I had to use a small chisel and hammer after 2 of the screws striped out.
