Zilla groaning noise
#1
when letting out the clutch on the zilla, taking off and second third gear shifts it makes a groaning noise. The clutch doesnt slip and everything seems to be ok.The noise seems to get louder the longer I ride. There is no debris in the waste oil after an oil change and fluid level was full. Its just a noise. Is it normal? I havent pulled the cover to inspect tabs on the basket , would a worn basket cause this? I am new to the zilla and have only put about 3 weekends on it. Is there anything I should look out for? oh yeah, its an 87

I used Golden Spectro 2 cycle m/c gear gase oil s.a.e. 80w, says nowhere on the bottle that it is synthetic, hope its not. what should I be using, did that oil trash my clutch? I dont know what was in it when i bought it (june) but what came out of it smelled similar to the 80w I put in it, so I thought it was ok. Its what I used on my 250R when I put a new clutch in it and it works fine?
I did not install the clutch in the Zilla, I was told that it has a dirt digger clutch kit in it. Are the springs in that kit sufficient? I probibly need to pull the cover and take a look, eh?
what do you recommend I do first?

Okay Freak... I'd say the oil is not your problem... I think that's pretty good stuff your using.
I'm willing to bet the 'dirt digger' clutch plates are the problem... possibly with weak stock springs in place also.
I recommend stock Suzy clutch fibers with barnett HD springs... I just went thru this last year with mine... The dirt digger couldn't handle the ponies my motor makes, and made one heck of a noise when it would slip...
Just my $.02
Good luck!

Hey Dune Addict, thanks for your input. did yours get worse the hotter it got? I ripped it up and down the street, all the way through third gear on pavement carrying the front end all the way. It spun the tires 2nd & 3rd gear.
I diddnt feel any slip or hear the groaning noise. I dont have anywhere local to ride. It seemed to get worse the longer I rode. What is a good source with knowlegable people for parts. For the 250R I have to look up my own part #s before going to the local honda dealer, they can never get it right the first time on there own. Thanks again!
Hey Redneck how many pairs of shoes can a rednecks olelady have? Mines just got 1 pair of riding boots and a pair of shoes for work the rest of the time she's barefoot in a tube top! She thinks there is a problem when Im not in the garage wrenchin..

Freak,
Wow, a tube top eh? Sure wish my wife was like that... she's always hacked at me for wrenching all the time.
My clutch problems were intermittent.. but it did seem to be worse when warm/hot.
It certainly didn't slip all the time, mostly during engagement, and shortly thereafter.
I avoid my local idiots (Umm, dealer) for parts, service, etc.
Service Honda is a good place, along with Honda of Troy... but there's many others that you can find online. There are also online microfische available for a majority of machines also.
Look here: http://www.hlsm.com/
I use Suzuki Genuine Parts @ 1-800-860-0686 for LT parts.
Man, looking at the toys in your garage reminds me of myself.... Same years too! Scarey!
I bought both of mine new way back when... so I'm the original owner

Dune Addict,
A few of my buddys got some quads and want to get a ride in before snow. Thinkin well go next weekend. I'll pay attention to it and see what happens. Probably will throw a Suzi clutch kit in it. I was lookin at team Alba oem parts online, there prices seemed high. If you were referring to Yamaha of Troy (same place???) in ohio I think, I have had one bad exp. with them, but they recovered well. Ordered what we thought was a loaded rear caliper for my 250R. When it arrived it was just a bare caliper body. One call and about $150.00 more I got the rest of the parts a week later. They really wanted to make sure I was satisfied customer and gave me 20% off my next couple of orders from them. I'll call them for My Zilla parts too. Or try the # you gave me. Thanks !
Which buggy is for sale? They both look so cool! I am looking for a 2 seat mid engine buggy myself. I dont need anything too wicked, just enough power to scare the trees. I just want a reliable vw powered buggy for night time rippin. My dad and a few of his buddys built a couple of chenoweth framed buggies back in the day, and I remember how much fun they were. I would like to see him get back into it too. thought if I got one, he couldnt resist building one for himself.
I'll let you know how things shake out with the zilla after the ride.
off topic, who is a good source for case inserts? I dont want to split the cases myself, just wanna crate the motor and ship it.
thanks for the help, be talking to ya.

Freak,
The single seater buggy WAS the one for sale... It's since been disassembled and parted out (Nobody wants a single seater)... Actually both buggies in my pics page have been parted out and sold.
A good buddy of mine built both of them and is currently building a long travel 4 seater, and then starting on a 4 seater for me sometime in December.
Last Winter he built a long travel (24") 2 seater mid engine with a LT-1 Small block... that thing really rips!
Keep me posted after your ride... Curious if it gets any better or stays the same.
Case inserts are tricky.... If you want a 'puppy' shop to do them, including assembly/disassembly, probably LRD would do you a good job... I had them do a set this fall... I felt their prices were really high (~350) for just the inserts... I only sent the case halves.
The thing is... All these builders only use Brass bushings.... It makes the machining process much easier than using hardened steel.
The hardened steel inserts are the BEST fix, and are regarded as permanent.... I only know of one guy that can do them... but he only wants your cases... And I'm not sure what he charges.
He'll do my next set.. I can probably hook you up if interested.
Have fun on the ride!
