Well some friends of mine were having a discussion the other day about what the true differences are between the first 2 years of the lt250r and the 87's and up. Well myself being the only person in the group who owns an lt250r 86 I was getting all the questions. Having never paid much attention to the other years, I don't really know what the differences were? Other then the T-bar seat and I think they added a powervalve system in 87. Any other facts or fiction would be appreciated......

The front shock brackets are different on the
85 and 86 models then on the 87 and later. The swing arms were also changed.

well ill start off here in 85 the front nose piece is black not blue, the swingarms are different, the seat is different, the 85 i think had the straight seat andthe rest are t-style seats, the powervalve system, the rims were gold on the 85 and i think 86, the 91 and 92 had better suspension that allowed 1 inch more of travel, the 85-87 have smaller intake ports than that of the 88-92's
thats it for now....

I believe the piston bore is slightly smaller in the 87 and up LT's. Not that it makes a difference. Also, The engine cases are blue on the 87 and up, as opposed to the satin finish on the 85-86. There is more, bu twithout my manual, I wont go into them.

Take care,

RoostKing...

your right roostking, the bore is different, the stock 85-86 is 249cc and the 87 is 246, so i gues all u pre 87 owners have got the jump on me, darnit.

the rear suspension changed dramatically in '91, its more like that of a std MX bike monoshock instaed of the rocker-arm style on pre '91 models=== more travel. the frame changed mildly to accomodate this. i don't knowif the front suspension changed any in these years. some year they also added adjustable damping too.
also the airbox was moved behind the shock and then the intake to the carb goes around the shock to the carb. since the shock is now where the airbox was.

Guys three are several distinct variations in the quadracer family. 85 -86, 87 - 90, 91 - 92.

Firstly engines. 85-86 engine is totally different to the 87 and up. 85-86 is case reed induction. 87 up is piston reed induction plus has the powervalve exhaust system. Nothing really interchangeable between the two engines at all.

87 Engine has an 8 petal reed valve, 88 to 92 has a 6 petal reed valve, 87 - 92 all other engine mechanicals basically the same.

The 87 and up engines have a lot more tuning potential than the 85 - 86, though these can still haul **** for rec riding for sure.

Interesting note, There is a 200 cc cylinder used in Suzuki's watercooled TS 200 trail bike which bolts straight onto I think the 85-86 bottom end ( I can check with the owner of this quad if anyyone is interested), these things will absolutely kill a modded blaster for 200cc class competition.

Chassis, several variations as mentioned. 91 to 92 by far the best with the totally revised rear end and adjustable damping on the front shocks.

85 has the straight seat, 86 went to the tee shape ??. quite a few chassis changes with the new engine in 87, different front shocks, longer with damping adjustments also, different rear shock, new swingarm / rear axle assembly. 91 -92 was the final refinement and the best of the breed with the revised rear suspension system (non floater).

I have an exhaust question on the 86 and the 87 models. I have an 86exhaust with a DG expansion chamber and I need the mid pipe and silencer to complete the system with it being a 3 part exhaust, but on the 87+, its a 2 piece so what if I ordered an 87exhaust from DG for my 86? Or is it not true that the 87+ are 2 piece?
