z400 in mud??

You probably would not want to be doing serious "mudding" with the z. It has a chain drive and they do not like a lot of mud. Get a shaft drive with a sealed differential if you want to do some mudding. The z is a great bike and will do a little mud just nothing over 10 inches and you should be ok.

I dont really have a problem, I keep the front end as light as possible or attempt to skip across it. They are right, it dus run out of ground clearence quick and a set of mud tires would be a good investment.

The stock rears are only 20" so you don't have a lot of ground clearence. We need a better definition of what you mean by mud. The Z400 is never going to out do a 4x4 with 27" tires but if your just talking the occasional mud hole you run across on a trail ride, then the Z will handle it fine. Be forewarned, once you spin the rear tires, you'll be wet and muddy. I still don't understand why sport quad fenders are designed for the dunes when those guys shave them off anyway.

A Z400 would do pretty good in smaller mudholes if you know how to get through them. I have gotten through mudholes on my Z250 that my uncle's Grizzly 660 has gotten stuck in. But then again, there were a few times in the deep stuff that he had to winch me out.
