I've put about 260 miles on my 00 KQ. Had my oil temp light come on, on 2 seperate occasions. I immediatley shot off the machine and let it cool down before continuing. Both times its happened my wife has been on with me, and we have riding slow and going up some fairly steep terrain. Between the two of us we are well under the max weight capacity. The second time it happened, when I went to start the engine it smelled real gassy and wouldn't start. Finally out of desperation I turned the gas valve to prime and it started, but was barely running. I turned the gas back on and we headed down the canyon. Going down the canyon, naturally, we were getting good air flow to the engine and not working it.
Any body else had similar problem? I guess thats the reason Suzuki has an optional fan they want to sell you for an outragous price.

Dan,
First, make sure the quad has ample oil in it by checking your sight glass on LEVEL ground. With 260 miles on this quad,it should have been changed allready, along with the filter. Are you using 10w-40w?Go to a fully synthetic blend oil,it disapates heat much better than regular blend oils. Please make sure the oil cooler in the front of the quad is NOT caked with mud,if so,its rendered useless.

Make sure you are NOT over reving the quad.I had a KQ that would get hot real fast if you were not in the right gear for the terrain you were riding.Example,to low a gear will cause excessive engine RPMs which will easily lead to an overheating problem, make sure you are not over reving your quad.

There should not be a PRIME valve on the KQ model, are you sure it was not the reserve valve you turned the gas valve to?Im concerned about your smelling excessive gas.

Try the above mentioned things and let me know how your doing, best of luck,====Bill

Bill, there is a Prime setting on the 2000 king quad... I have it on mine as well, although I never really understood what it ment.

Good luck, I haven't had a single problem with my king, and would love to get another one on my next atv purchase, although I would hope that suzuki does go through with the rumor of having a 400 king on the way.

LOng live the king, baby!

I took the KQ to the dealer and they checked the jet and said it was jetted for 8000' which is about where it should be. Took it for a ride this p.m. and didn't have heat up problem. (paid more attention to high revs and slow speeds) However after riding for about an hour I stopped for a break and shut it off. The machine was warm but not hot. When i went to start it, as soon as I hit the starter it smelled real gassy again and wouldn't start. After about a half hour it finally started with full throttle and I had to keep it at full throttle to keep it running and get going. After going a few yards it started to run better, sputtered a couple of times and off I went. When I got back to main road and ran it down that a couple of miles, I shut it off and it started right back up and ran fine. Any Ideas? Sorry to be so long winded. Dan

Dan,its got to go back to the dealership.Something is causing the carburetor to flood, thats probably why it starts hard and your smelling fuel.

Jester,
thanks for informing me of the prime valve on the new 00 Model KQs.I did not know that.====Bill
