We ran out of gas and switched to reserve. Then the starting problems started. At first we thought that there must have been some gunk in the bottom of the tank, so we flushed the gas, cleaned out the carb, replaced the spark plug, and made sure that the air filter was clean. We verified that there is a nice spak at the plug. The engine turns over but it just won't start most of the time. It's almost like it has a choke problem, but playing with the choke still does not fix the problem. We can rarely get it started - when we do, we have to keep high rpm's or it dies.

Any suggestions as to what could be the cause and what we should try? Thanks.

sounds like you have done all the things I might do in the same situation.

do you have a service manual for your lt80? if so, check the troubleshooting guide. another thing you might do is call the bike shop & pump the service guy for info, maybe he is aware of a simple fix to your problem.

sounds like she is starving for fuel, or maybe getting too much oil. did you fill the oil when you refueled your "out of gas" machine? If so, did you use a good quality 2 cycle injection oil?

my sons bike quit running the other day for what seemed to be no reason. It restarted, but didn't have enough power to engage the clutch. It turned out to be a dirty air filter, (which looked fairly clean). with the visual condition of the air filter, I would have never guessed it was going to solve my problem to clean it. I cleaned it anyway, since I had it in my hand. I found it to be quite dirty when I washed it in gas although it looked clean. the lt80 fired back to life, and ran like new again.

please post the problem when you learn for sure what it is. good luck

I always keep the injector oil full, with each gas fill up. I cleaned the air filter, and have tried it with no air filter, so I do not think that the air filter is the issue. I do not have a tech manual for this quad, just the owners manual. Is there something I should do to verify oil injection? I could see where no oil would make it run rough, but would it affect the starting capability?

Does anyone have any other ideas to try? Thanks.

My son recently rolled his LT80. He immediately got back on and began to ride. After about 5 minutes it died. I pulled the plug, it didn't look fouled, and replaced it. It still wouldn't start. I did the same as you and checked the wiring, spark, and air filter. All seemed OK. Upon returning home, I pulled the carb to clean it. However, I noticed the pin that holds the float in place had barely come loose allowing one side of the float to open causing it to flood. It may be worth checking.

This would exactly match the performance symptoms I am seeing. I guess I'll have to tear into the carb again and check it out. Thanks for the great info.
