Default USE A GOOD OIL FILTER

There was some discussion about oil and filters on another thread, and thought this subject could use it's own thread. The importance of oil filtration cannot be understated. I'm a field service engineer at Hach Ultra Analytics. Never heard of them, I know. We are the world's largest manufacturer of laser particle counters. These measure all types of particulates in oils, water, hydraulic fluids, air, even in near-vacuum. Numerous studies have been done by the US NAVY, Cat Diesel, shipping companies, etc... on the effect of multi-pass sub-micron filtration. The upshot of all this is that the more lubrication oils are filtered, the longer the machines last. A particular NAVY study found that with .1 micron filtration (normal oil filters are good to something like 5-10 microns) their engine oil lasted 3 times longer, and after 21,000 hours of operation, there was ZERO WEAR. This compared to the normal tear-down/rebuild intervals of 6000-8000 hours.

SO, use a good filter! I know I plan on changing my Eiger's filter REGULARLY. I mean, how much could that possibly cost?? And, it's so easy.

Change it early and often

Search this forum for the thread "Eiger oil recommendations - Weight/drand.conv./synth??" peteyz24 posted a good cross reference for oil filters. 15 non stock filters.

I saw that post back whenever and copied the info. Are all these filters equal as far as filtration capabilities?

I doubt all those filters are alike. I don't recommend emgo or jc whitney, fer sure. Wix makes some good stuff and you can't hardly go wrong with a fram. I'm waiting on some pics from zex, he cut a few open and took pics.

Pics of the filter media should be way cool. Fram's always bragging about their filters, it'd be funny to open one up and find it's newspaper wrapped around a hair curler.

Eiger2, You say you can not go wrong with Fram, well when I looked at the cut open picture site the Fram was the worst filter you can buy. It is realy close to what aksafari thought might be funny(inside of filter). Alaska

Agree. If the FRAM ATV filter is anything like the car oil filter than stay away from it. It is junk, junk, junk.
