You can't just take the rev limiter "off". It is programmed into the CDI. Many aftermarket cdis dont have a limiter. If you have a wiring diagram, and can read it, you will see how to defeat it.

Just be careful if you disable it. A quad is not designed to go fast in reverse, and the handling is very jerky when moving quickly in reverse. It must be the caster. Anyways remember that when it is disabled, if your spinning like mad in mud and you bite into traction, the handling will be very unpredictable at higher speeds than the limiter allows.
Just dont want to see a fellow ATV'er get hurt is all.

My friends raptor had a problem with the reverse rev limiter. It was kicking in while going forward. On that bike, all you have to do to disable it is ground it, which we did. It ran great but a few hours later, he put it in reverse, forgot about the disco'd rev limiter, hit the gas too hard, which made him go forward and push the gas some more and ended up on his lid. Pretty funny for everyone but him.

I dont think there is any way in hell that disconnecting the limiter can melt your piston, the engine is still rotating in the same direction, your just reversing the output direction of the transmission. As long as you dont hold it at WOT for a VERY long time then you shouldn't hurt anything. So to answer your question, I would say no, it would be just like having the thing ***** out in first gear, since more often than not reverse and first are the same (or close) ratios.

The reverse limiter is to protect YOU not the machine. It is a pain in the butt when yer in mud and want to get out backwards.
If you do go ahead and defeat it, put in a switch so you can select when to do it. I used a 3 way switch and wired it so that I could also turn it on when someone else is riding it forwards since I have an auto and if you hold er WOT she takes off a lil fast for novices.
