Its true, and a small investment in one can save you a lot of headache and $$$ later.
Some of the stock set ups do use a guard but many times its not wide enough and the chain can still catch the case.
Another thing that helps is to maintain your chain and replace it when needed.

yep happened to me, The chain came off bound up at the front sproket and broke the chain guard off which has studs into the case and made a little hole down into the trans, Some JB weld fixed it. But I run without a guard now and it will never happen again.

This is a fairly common prob, especially on 230 models. If happens often when the swingarm/carrier bearing have too much play. Also a snapped chain can get thrown into the case and break it. For the few bucks they cost, they can save you and expensive case.
