I believe the crank area where the fuel and air are mixed, is separate and sealed from the trans area, so if the chunk is missing from around the trans area, then the worst you have to worry about is trans fluid leaking.

The silicone was on the very bottom of the engine in two areas, with the largest area near the front part of the bottom

Well in a better mood today, had her idling and sprayed some starter fluid on the area where the silicone was, not rev up. I pulled off the gear oil filler plug and played with the clutch with my finger. It seems the disks have some side to side movement in the basket. That must be what that vib/rattle is.

On the plus side the i got the ol xt running today and had her out for a tear

Well ordered my brake pads today, and a clymer manual. I am going to pull off the stator and clutch covers as soon as i get the manual, and check everything out

(play in the stator=bad crank bearings right?)

If there is no play in the stator, i am going to re-torque the clutch, and just ride

thanks for the input

how much did you get the bike for, and is it cosmeticaly in good shape, as a rule of thumb a good looking bike chances are runs better than a bad looking one, but not always. did he say what it was bored to also?

paid 2400 CDN for the bike (yeah i know, but is hard to find a decent sport quad around here)

The plastics are faded, but not cracked, and some minor rust (looks like it was kept outside for a while)

All the guy could tell me that he bought it used from a dealer last fall, rode it around his yard once, and put it in his sled. With no time to ride, he decided to sell it.

Before he bought it the dealer told him that it had a new piston and rings.

Its a clean bike, generally, but it needs some tlc for a neat freak like me.

Got out to work on it today.

New brakes are just about done, all i have left to do is change the gear oil, flush the rad, and change the gas.

A few questions
What are you guys running for gear oil?
What octane gas to run on a stock engine?

I pulled the stator cover off, and its tight (therefore crankbearings are good, right?)

I think the vibration is the clutch. I pulled off the filler cap for the gear oil and fingered the clutch, its got alot of play just sitting there, but when i pull in the clutch lever it significantly reduces the play. Is this normal, is this what my vibration is.

As to the silicone on the bottom of the engine, its getting another coat to be save (doesnt seem to be leaking). I will ride it like that for a while, and latter this summer when i get some cash, I am goin to split the cases.

Hi, I also live in Canada and have a quadracer, I run Castrol 10W40 4 stroke grand prix oil for my transmission. 87 octane is fine for a stock machine it only requires 85 in the manual, but the extra bit for premium is worth it, don't run crappy gas or Sunoco it has a lot of ethenal in it, real crap. where abouts do live in canada. I got a 1991 and paid $3100 for it but it is mint. you should have a look at it on bikepics.com.

I run 15w-50 Castrol Motor oil in my LT.
91 octane pump gas is fine.
Does the vibration deminish when you pull the clutch? Most vibration in these bikes are main bearings or maybe someone did not line the counterbalancer back up correctly when they had it apart.
