How far can you go???
#1
I just got a 2003 Suzuki Vinson 500 Auto. My question is...How far (miles) can you go on a full tank of gas. I'm trying to figure out if I should be carring an extra gas tank with me. Thanks.

outrage,
Snug says he can go around 90 miles on his Vinson. That seems reasonable but I would carry some extra gas, say a 2.5 gallon container.
I personaly carry 5 gallons and have since I started riding up here. The reason is because you never know when you might dump it into a river and have to replace the gas in it or when you travel just alittle further and find yourself in need of more fuel or when you run into somebody who has run out and lastly, it makes a great fire starter.
I carry gas and a 100 feet of rope, first aid kit, extra water and water filter, extra set of clothes with 2 pairs of socks, air compressor with tire plugs, little stove, freeze dried meals and that is just the start. I carry lots of goodies because I like the idea of making it home if I should happen to have a problem or if you find somebody who is in the need of asistance.
I know you only wanted to know about gas but after reading about your fellow Air Force memembers having trouble at the glacier and it sounded like they did not have much except a cigarette lighter. I have given my advice to alot of new wheelers on what to carry because I know what Alaska can throw at you, this is the same knowledge I was given 10 years ago and have applied it and I am still learning from other people on what to carry.

Thanks again Alaskaboy for the info. After this post I was thinking about asking about all the other stuff too. I carry a lot of stuff with me too like an air compressor, gas, rope, straps, snacks, maps, tire plugs, first aid kit, extra socks, rain gear, cell phone, camera, two way walki-talkies if there's another rider, flash light, lighter, cable with lock just in case I break down and have to leave the thing in the woods somewhere, and a few other things. I have one of those 5 gal. gas can racks on my back racks but I've found if I carry a full can the weight will bend my racks. I was thinking about maybe getting one of those long thin boat gas cans or maybe trying a 2.5 gal. tank? I hate the idea of being without one at all but I hate to carry lots of stuff if I'm not going very far too. Along those lines I have a question that may be stupid. If you had to empty your tank on your ATV how would you go about doing it, hose?
Can't wait to do one of the overnighters or weekenders though. Pack it to the max and call it an adventure. The only thing is you need some buddies to go with for safety reasons.

Outrage,
Good list and the 2.5 would be fine for short trips, I carry a 2.5 while hunting and the 5 gallon cans stay in camp.
Overnighters are a must, in fact I am trying to put one together for the 10th of June(afternoon) and coming back to town on the sunday(14th), I want to try Pinochlle trail. It goes back to Caribou creek and there is usually caribou and the occasional moose and bear to see and the I hear of a trout or two being caught in the creek.
Up for all or part of these days/ I am hopeing Snug will be able to come maybe his whole family.
Any other takers out there who want to join in? The more the merrier.

I would so love to attend but my wife will be out of town during those dates so that leaves me here watching the kids. Is this going to be a ATV ride or a hunting trip? Either way it sounds like fun! To bad about the dates though.
If you go on any other overnighters/weekenders let me know. I'm always in for an adventure.

Outrage,
To bad on those days but I will be heading out alot this summer and I will let you know of future dates.
This trip is just a get out of town trip, no hunting, just sitting by the fire and sipping a few cold ones at night and exploring in the day. Oh man that sounds so good, doesn't it?
I have not been on Pinochlle trail in at least 5 years and I am curious how it has changed over the years.
Sorry to do it to you AKsafari. You must like it in Oregon because most of my friends who moved outside have come back, thye could not take the civilized life of the states .
I am going out to Jim Creek for the cleanup, they say there is supposed to be a fun run and BBQ after the cleanup but I do not think I will be able to go on it as I have my little boy and the farthest he has ridden is just past Jim Creek.
Do you hunt Outrage?

Outrage,
I need somebody to go with me on sunday out to Jim Creek, are you up for it?
I am dropping a friend off on saturday when I go out to clean and I told him I would come back on sunday and pick him up and of course since I am there I might as well spend the day riding. He does not want to be picked up till evening so I might as well head up towards the glacier.
Let me know what you think and we can arrange times and places if you can and want too.
