Default z-400 cam chain

I can hear my chain hitting the inside of my engine. I know there is a cam chain tensioner, is there a way to tighten the chain from the tensioner? The first time this has happened i still had it under warrenty so thet fixed it, now i am on my own.

yes, because this is not the first time this has happend. ITs the second, the first time i had warranty so i had a place do the work, and they said the valves were fine it was the chain tensioner that was loose? Thats what the service depart. said. I need to know how to tighten the cam chain tensioner. I know there is one on the outside of the engine, i just dont know how to tighten it.

The cam chain tension is the Z is an automatic one, but its not very good. A lot of people have been putting manual cam chain tensioners in from Hayabusa street bikes and that seems to be solving a lot of the cam chain problems. My Z is in the shop right now getting a new chain, you will probably have to have another chain too. The chain itself isn't that expensive, about 60 bucks. And that manual cam chain tension i was talkin about earlier is about 40-60 bucks. So it should be well worth it. Later

How long will the chain last if its already slappen against the engine! You cant manually adjust them, or does the chain just get stretched out? This is B/S this is the second time already!!! Is it hard replacing it if i had to?

The chain gets stretched out and you'll need to get a new one. I heard it was pretty difficult to do yourself because its a DOHC and then you might have to adjust your cams after putting it on, so I just took mine to a dealer. I know it is BS but once it gets replaced ur better off.

chain slapping and unadjusted valves sound close to the same, if the dealer has already changed your tensioner then its probably your valves. I thought my chain was toast but my intake valves were way outta spec.
Adjusted them yesterday and no more noises. Plus the CDI doesn't help ya out any ether unless you have cams, if you have the stock cams still in there, then you will have to adjust the valves more then common maintenance requires you to.

Suzuki won't choke the power of the quad off with the CDI, stock CDI was designed to give the quad the maximum revs that wont do any damage. If you put an aftermarket CDI with an extra 1000rpms on then your
putting the revs into the red, heating the motor up more and causeing more wear. Aftermarket CDI's were made to produce higher rpms for performance cams and motors that can handle the higher rev's.

A CDI and nothing else is like putting on long travel arms and leaving the stock suspension.

You know i was thinking about that? With that extra 1000 rpm it cant be that good for the cams and valves, Especially if i hold at a high rpm, for example going up a sand hill. I have the hotcam intake and exhaust cams.I took them out because the only thing they did was make my quad slower! I didnt do the work my self, i had a service place do them. So. do you think i should get the cams reinstalled some where else and have them look at the cam chain?

That sounds like a good plan, and I would only get the intake cam done, you only benifit from the EX cam if you port the head. This could be why you lost power from having both of them. You will notice a difference with the intake cam.
