Yes it will fit in your airbox, and you can run with the lid off. To put it in, you must deform the K&N to the square shape of the opening. Then you inch it down inside the airbox, removing most of the skin from your fingers. Once it's inside the airbox, you must maneuver it around the post where the stud goes. This will cost you at least one fingernail.
Now that you've got it over the post, just try to get the steel lid on with the lip just perfectly over the filter. Ha Ha!! Now you have a dislocated pinky finger!! Okay, so now you have the lid on, and the wingnut screwed down tight. You could go riding, but you are now just praying to die.
I cut my airbox all the way off and fashioned a support for the end, and now I can get right to the filter without wishing I was dead.

the first thing i did when i got mine was trash the crappy k and n filter and bought a UNI...it actually only takes me about 5 minutes to get it on, although putting the filter over the plastic cage thing is kinda hard. I would never go with another K and N from wat i have seen on both of my suzuki's.

Need K&N air filter for my 87 LT250r
Went riding this weekend with the lid open and sucked some water in during a small stream crossing. I am currently running the Moose 2-stage. It kept the dirt/dust out but not the water. The quad did not stall, it just bogged down a little.
Despite all the pain that I am going to have, I went with the K&N and pre-filter. I ordered it from Rockymountainatv.com. They were $23.00 less than the next cheapest. We'll see how long it takes to get here.

I have a K&N filter and my quadracer is absolutely insane (I have many other mods of course). Keep it clean and oiled and use the prefilter. Shadyrascal is right... the screen is as sharp as a razorblade so be careful and you have to squeeze it a little to fit it in the box. I think why they take in a little dust sometimes is because people don't seal them right. I douse the rubber parts with marine greese or wheel bearing greese. I cleaned the air box thoroughly on the mating surface and installed 1" thick foam sealer that can be purchased from home depot.... This foam has a sticky side and sticks right to the airbox... I then greese the foam and install the filter and screw the wingnut real tight. The rubber on the filter compresses the foam and offers a great seal. If you follow these directions I can assure you that their will be no dirt passing through your motor at least where the foam meets the filter.
I am a maintenence nut and I flip if you kick dust at my quad cause I don't like dirty airfilters.... I like riding after a light rain so I don't have to worry about any of this garbage!!!
my .02 cents well actually its probably my .10 cents...lol

LTrider,
I have installed the K&N. It came with a rubber gasket that mounts on the air box. It mates up with the filter and makes a tight seal. I have had no problems with so far. It definetly allows the quad to breath.
As far as being a pain in the a$$ to install, it's not. Took less than 5 minutes the first try. I can whip it in and out with no problem and no cut hands.
