Informative post Yagerzz, I have a couple things to add. (not to hijack your post or anything)
The newer 88+ studs are slightly different (Diff part #) as they are 10mm on the bottom, stepped down to 8mm on top (To fit thru the head) The larger diameter offers better holding strength, and as previously mentioned, there is one more than the '87.
And them older style flywheels do come apart! I've broken two of them so far... pull the side cover and look at the flywheel... if you see rusty streaks comming from the rivits.... you might start shopping for another one.
It really sucks when they come apart.... cause usually it kills the stator too.

Duneaddict, good catch on the head bolts. I just realized my post was in error over the weekend. Yes, the newer studs are bigger in the jug. Sorry Bigone for the misinfo. You may want to install the larger studs afterall.
