Default Just purchased my First R, Have ?s

I just bought a 1992 Lt250r with a fatty pipe and a turbine core silencer. Boy is it fast compared to my 230s!My first question, what does the power-valve do,do you adjust it,how? My next question, what type of gear oil should I use?Any light Shed on these Questions would be greatly appreciated.

My understanding is that there isn't any reason to adjust the powervalve unless you go to a higher elevation or do mods.

I definately agree with rockrider, I can't see why you'd need to touch the pv.
I am not sure what type of gear oil to run.

Only real reason to adjust it from stock is if the spring was starting to ware a little or if you want the power to come on in a differen't rpm. Factory setting is about as good as it gets for overall riding. I just use 10/40 for oil.

The power valve is basically like an adustible expansion chamber. There is a hollow spot in the front of you engine cases that the exhaust flows into to help low end power. At higher rpms, the valve that allows the exhaust to enter it is shut off which helps on the top end power. You should peak in the little window when you engine is idling. If you watch the little actuator and peg the throttle for a second, you should see the actuator move and shut the valve. This tells you that it's working. They can get gummed up pretty easy and not work. As far as adjusting them, you shouldn't have to touch them as long as they haven't been tampered with because they're designed to work at a certain RPM. You should however get a Suzuki shop manual though because if you ever have to take it apart, it tells you what the stock setting is.

As far as oil goes, I typically use BelRay Gear Saver for transmissions. It's thicker than 4 stroke engine oil and is quite a bit better for transmissions.

Stock setting is one full revolution counter clockwise from slipping the adjuster into place.

The powervalve absolutely will not affect how fast the engine returns to idle. That is what you have a carburetor for.

It is my understanding that they alter port timing on the exhaust port. Before powervalves you had to sacrifice top end power if you wanted bottom end and vice versa. The powervalve solved that problem.
