Default Buying a LT500

I was wondering if this is a good deal. A 1987 Lt500 with a rebuilt engine. Perfect Shape, plastic and everything for $2300. I'm going to go ride it today and if I like I might get it. What should I be looking for with these type of quads.

Well, 87's had a nasty habit of leaking water from the head because it only had 6 studs instead of 7. Listen to the motor very carefully. Zilla's need crank bearings every couple of years (some will argue that point) to keep it from beating the cases out of round. Other than that they do require attention and if they break then it is VERY costly. Also, make sure the transmission shifts great and it doesnt pop out of any gear. If it does pop out of one or more gears then pass it on by. You'll spend several hundred dollars in parts alone to repair the transmission.

It ran really good and it looked like it didn't have any problems with it. I got until Thursday to see if I like it or not. It doesn't seem as fast as my other 2 quads but everyone says there the fastest ever.

weisco lists it at 523cc, oh and the 500r is a torque monster, makes around 50 hp arw, but it only has a redline of 7500, they feel slow but trust me they haul *****, part of the feeling is from how the quad sits, wide and low, they will out handle your other quads around sharp turns if you know how to ride it, 87's are the most common but do have a head problem, and with the right sprocet they can reach speeds of up to 97-98mph with a stock engine, but If you did that you would want to build the engine to help it get there. 23 is alittle high for an 87 with that much overbore try getting him down to 2. thats a better price.

Well I didnt buy it, My buddy bought it. He got it for 2 grand. I road it yesterday and it ran pretty good. 1st through 3rd its fast but when it hits 4th it just like has no power and then go into 5th and still the same. I mean its got power but it just falls off the powerband easily. Is there a problem or is that how they run. I know I could beat it with either of my quads in a straight line though

Yea, got it for 2200, but tonight, the clutch started acting up on it, id pop it in first, let clutch out completly and it wouldnt go, and i could roll it around while it was in gear. i thought the tranny was f'ed, but then my buddy (yamaharideronly) came over at night, fiddled with teh clutch, turns out, the screw was broke, anbd i need a new cable, pickin one up tomorrow morning. when i get some new tires, im gunna race his rap, hell prob win, but no biggie, its fast for a stock rap . but now, hed ear my *** up on dirt, i cant get grip at all with these tires, take off, throttle pinned in 4th gear, only going about 25 lol tires like to just spin like crazy thru all the gears
