Default LT 500 jetting

ok first off i realize that alot comes into play with this topic i just want a few opinions. I have a 1987 LT 500 duncan pipe fat boy exhaust, TDR reeds 3/8's reeds spacer, STD bore wiseco pro lite piston, stock head, ported but i'm not sure of the port timing, reed cage is ported i cut off the middle legs on each side where the reeds lay, trimmed 3mm off the reed stops, cleaned the carb boot up took the hard angle out off the bottom it, now may latest thing here is a 39mm keihin carb upgrade its been bored to 40mm but it nearly measures 40.5mm standard jets in the carb are 60 pilot, 170 main #6 cutaway hooked to stock air box an filter, i dropped the pilot to a 55 an the main to 150, seems to make good power but won't idle an the idle screw seems use less it doesn't change if turnt all the way in I live here in canada ontario temp is cooling down abit but not cold as of yet. what do ya think go smaller in the pilot its giving the signs but i wanted some peoples opinions thanks.

well ok here i go some more, i have tried smaller pilot jets an still rich, running but rich, i'm thinking about cutting my slide from the #6 that it is now to a #7. Does anyone have an idea of how much this will lean my circuit out like persay is it similar to goin down 2-3 pilot jets i'm not sure how much 1mm will affect my jetting. I was told here that it was trial an error basically but i thought i'd toss it out here an see what i get in return thanks in advance.

jay its wildcard here i just went through the same thing, i called duncan racing and they said these carbs dont idle good no-matter what you do he said dont go less than 55 pilot, and you should not go any less than 170 main, probably closer to a 180-185. and run a dgj needle on the third or fourth notch, you must be lean on top have you done a plug chop at wide open? I had real trouble getting mine right so i didnt have time to mess with it, I had some trips to go on this week comming so i switched back to my stock carb and rejetted it and the machine is running the best it has ever ran. I couldnt get mine to idle with the kehin either and my air screw seemed to do nothing as well. same as my idle screw i could screw it in all the way or out all the way and no difference. if yiou get any good info let me know.

mike, i tried ur info provided i was still rich i dropped the pilot to a 45, seems to help i don't have the same needle as u said i forget the # now, it i was abit lean up top i corrected that my motor will idle not for long thou loads up an dies, starts again fine but what a pain my *** have to get off an help the boy a sec an kick this bad boy over once again. well with the 45 pilot i can set my air screw to 1.5 turns out for highest rev, i'm getting alittle scared so to speak to keep leanin it down i'm getting far from the original pilot jet size which was a 60, i have no idea if thats a concern i should have or not. I was out by ur place last weekend i seen ur quad in the drive way i just drove by i would have stopped if u were outside maybe next time.
