Your opinions on restoring LT/buying new 4-stroke...

As of now i have a quadracer that i have had for about a year and so far i have basically just done the normal upkeep on it that the past owners serverely failed to do such as bearings, bushings, brakes, water pumps, jetting, etc...It is running good except for fouls plugs every once in awhile during warm up. ( plug is dark brown for 10 or so rides, then the next rides it fouls during warm up and its black and is almost dripping wet...any clues?? ) But anyways, for the past couple weeks i have been trying to sell it because i found a 99 440ex with alot of stuff on it for racing such as the 440 kit, extended arms and axle, white bro's front shocks, pro peg nerfs, beadlock rims and holeshot mx's, and much more stuff for about 3000. I havent got to look at it yet except for pictures but it is nice. I have been wanting it very badly and have pretty much had my mind set on it until i just starting thinkin about my quadracer again. I thought i could either sell now and buy the 400, or pass up on the 400 and do a little restoration on the quadracer, sell it for more money and buy a different 400 later on. I want to get into motocross next season, and want a good suspended quad to do that ( NOT my quadracer ). But on the restoration i was going to paint every thing up all nice ( friend has sand blaster and paint shop and said he would paint it all for the price of the paint ), put new front tires on, 400ex front shocks, re charge back shock, chain and sprockets, new nerfs and handle bars, aaand anything else fairly inexpesive that comes up along the way. Now i know the 400 is gonna be better on the track, but do you think i will be able to find another similar modded 400 for that price range later?? I am asking 2500 for my 'racer, and if i rebuild it i will put around 400-500 into it, so it will be about the same amount of money to either buy the 400 or restore this one. Anyone on here want the 'racer??

ummm...im not looking to motocross the LT very much...this rebuild is mainly going to be a cosmetic rebuild, and to improve somethings...Im going to put 500-600 into it, but if i wanted it to handle awesome, i would put all the money into the suspension, or if i wanted it to be faster, i would put all the money into the engine, but im just going to get everything looking good. This restoration is going to include...
-painting of EVERYTHING, basically only 2 colors, trasparent blue and a good looking silver.
-pair of 400ex front shocks
-re-charge rear shock
-Razr tires all the way around
-chain/sprockets
-new upper a-arm ball joints (already have bottoms) and new tie-rod ends
-new clutch perch and lever
-Renthal bars
-Either new nerfs or new nets for my old ones
-And im gonna work with the jetting
And the "maybe" list...
-New shock covers (old ones are faded out)
-New reads and reed spacer
-New front and rear bumpers
-New piston/rings
Hmm...not much else i can think of that is cheap to help the looks, performance, or handling of it. After this the only thing it would need would be expensive stuff...shocks, a arms, swingarm, axle, engine kits, etc...But i prolly wont do any of that. Its almost for sure that im gonna rebuild this instead of buying the 400...Any other ideas of small stuff i should do??

I would probably go for a new stroke. I'm almost done with my 500 (need plastics, seat, tires, wheels) and even though I like it, I think I would really like the new Yami 450; elec. start, lightweight, not tippy like the Raptor, etc. so that's what I'll probably be buying next. That 440 sounds good, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it just as much if not more than your 250. It will handle better than the 250 (if your 250 is stock) especially with the xtnd a-arms and aftermarket shocks. You won't have that wonderful 2-stroke powerband, but that 400 was/still is a nice racer.
Edit: Seeing that you have replied and are pretty set in rebuilding the 250, don't forget to factor in $200 or so for new a-arm, swingarm, and possibly wheel bearings.

umm...in the first post i said that i already did the normal upkeep on it...all bearings/bushings have been replaced except for the rear shock linkage bearings which were like new when i did all the old bearings. I dont want this to handle or be as fast as the 400...i am just doing this for the experience and because ever since i got the 'racer, i always wanted it to look really good. I think its cool to have a quad no one has ever heard of that they think is a new quad, yet its 14, 15 years old. Im just doing minor performance and handling upgrades, yet it is going to look really nice.

lol are you kidding me? the LT handles almost as good as the 250R which is the best handling ATV. it all depends on what you like.

I love my LT but if I wanted to race mx, where my quads gonna take a beating every weekend, I'd do it on a new 400/450.

I've had an 87 LT for 14 years now. My kid rides it today. Bought a YFZ last spring and man there ain't no comparison in handling. And, the power on the YFZ is way better. New tech kicks if you can afford it.
