I mounted my oil cooler on my front rack. I know of others that have done that with their radiator. You can put a shield in front of it that might help, Of course, not if you burry it.

I found out what works the best is to make sure you clean it as well as possible before you take it back out. The mud bakes onto the cooling fins and is difficult to remove. Using a garden hose with a nozzle (not a high pressure washer) repeatedly wash it out. Spray it till you think it is clean and then wait about 10 minutes to permit the water to soak thru to another mud layer and hit it again. Do this till no more dirty water drains off. It usually takes 4 or 5 attempts to clean it completely.

You would want to put a couple of inches in between the shield and the radiator.
I have a shield on mine and so do about 6 or so of my riding buddies. Here's a couple of pics.

I'll try to find some more pics. If you have a good fan the space can be about 1-1.5 inches
between the shield and cooler.

a screen or sheet metal will help, no doubt. just make it strong enough so that it won't get torn up very easy. If you mount it at couple of inches from the radiator it can still work. The fan will be able to pull all the air it can through a 1.5 to 2 inch gap all the way around a piece of sheet metal. Most of those fans can't move but around 300cfm. The gap would be plenty large.

What i have there i can take off and mount in the stock location. I used some adapters on the hose so i didn't have to cut the factory hose ends, If i wanted to use the factory cooler again. I would mount the current cooler in the stock location and all would be ok.

Get a small bilge pump...keep it with you...when you come to a clean creek wash it out on the trail...just throw the suction end in the stream...and spray the water out the front into the radiator! Depends how bad you have the problem, if you can't get back to the truck without overheating...it is handy to have!

Antalope

Impressive set up. I noticed a temp gauge what does your quad usually run at?

Does it ever still overheat?
