Default advice from my fellow suzuki guys

being i am considering a 400ex.

i seem to have found one for 2850, obo, so i called the guy up, and asked him if he would take 2600, he said ok.

my only questions are

am i going to be dissapointed in the power of the 400 compared to a z, or the money i save on the 400 i can get myself a 440 kit.

The only mods that this 400 has is

2004 plastics, and Works shocks. and a FMF pipe.- my only drawback is it is a 1999.

a few weeks back, I watched a guy throw a bearing out the front of his case with a 440 kit. After they've been modified this much, the great Honda reliability goes out the window imo.

Not bashing Honda. In stock form they are incredibly reliable.

It all depends on what will disappointed you. Personally, I was impressed with my 400EX when it came to racing the Zs. I thought by listening to most people on here that I would get creamed if I lined up with a Z but when I did there was VERY little difference in the two. Sure, a Z may be a tad faster but it was barely noticeable.
If you were buying new I'd say get the Z (especially now), but buying used I know I'd feel more confident to buy the 400EX....................Besides, you'll never find a Z for that price!

Haha,10 hp short.

What kind of riding are you going to be doing? There are also a lot of cheap raptors and banshees for sale.

Or maybe if you are worried about reliability you could just get a 416 kit or something. Or maybe drop a yz426f engine in it.

The EX is my choice for tight trails, where you will never miss the extra horsepower. I pick the Z for more open trails and wide open desert.

here is my plan of attack.

i want to race the 400ex.

get some 2+1 arms, and axel
elkas
holeshots
beadlocks
440 kit, or 426, or 416
nerf
bars
plastics,
and all the other odds and ends.

i am concerned about power and price.

this 400ex in my paper seems nice, with works shocks and a ti-4 fmf pipe.

and for 2600$ you cant go wrong, it also has BRAND new plastics on it.

Believe me, you can go wrong spending $2600 for a 5 year old machine. I purchased my atv's new because I've seen the "deals" my friends got. Their "deals" got way less great after spending time and money on all the constant repairs. You may in fact be getting a great deal on a great bike. But keep in mind that an EX with a pipe likely was not used to ride to the barn and back. It was likely hammered on pretty hard. Five years of that will take it's toll on any machine. And.... I know my butt would get pretty sore from kicking myself everytime I had to get off and push it backwards

Good luck with whatever atv you end up with!
